Question about Dell UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Suffering from EXACT same problem. Also Dell UltraSharp 2001FP

It occurs exactly as described. ~2" vertical band of pixels starts to randomize colors. Then as a sweeping vertical line wipes across this "affected 2inch band" from right to left the pixels organize themselves as the line passes over them. They might all turn black (common) or they will all become some other color. When finished the vertical band will usually look like a rainbow-striped box.

This box manifests "in front" or "on top" of the regular desktop, so all windows and mouse activity passes behind it. The problem will often clear up after a while. Unplugging the monitor sometimes seems to fix it, but it may just coincide with it clearing up on its own?

I believe it is a problem with the panel itself, not the computer, graphics card or drivers. We happen to have 2 of these monitors, and if we switch-in the other one, the problem is never there.

This is heat, and is a common problem; it affects two of mine. You can verify this by having a can of Dustoff available and catching it when it first starts. Blow in at the top of the monitor through the holes in the back in the same region as the band. The color aberration should go away.

My solution was to make a shroud from black foamcore and use a spare power supply fan to blow air into the case at the top. This has worked for my two monitors for about 18 months. You can also just buy a 12v computer cooling fan for this purpose.Should be somewhere around 75mm in size and quiet, 'cuz you'll be putting up with it if it's not.You can either get a general 12v power supply, or an adapter that fits the 12v power out at the back next to the USB input connector.

Most likely, this is failing "inverter."
The backlight of the monitor (that makes the image visible) is controller by a special chunk of electronics called an inverter. They tend to fail over time. The symptom is that the backlight either never comes on, flickers, or shuts off after a short period of time.
It is a moderately advanced repair job to change out the inverter, but you can usually get the part on eBay. Search for the exact monitor model number and "inverter".
The 2001FP has six lamps and the inverter is fairly expensive. You might be better off putting that money towards a newer monitor.

Dell 2001FP vertical band issue

I'm having the same problem... there's also going to be about 5 years of dust sitting in there, so I hoping it might just be a failure of convective cooling. My first attempt to remove the bezel was unsuccessful, so I wasn't able to go in and look for any swollen capacitors or such. I have blown canned air in the sides, and it's actually doing a little better right now. Probably won't last... having a rather warm summer.

Vertical lines on left half of screen

The problem is the driver tabs that go from the panel controller board to the panel itself.

This is normally a fatal failure since having it repaired is extremely expensive.
