Question about Brother HL 5140 Laser Printer

Paper light blinking, paper tray full, won't print

The paper light is blinking, the status button is solid red. I have already loaded up the tray with paper. I have open the printer to see if any paper was jammed. I turned it off, turned it back on again. I turned off the computer, turned it back on again. Paper light is still blinking, and the printer is not printing. Remember: it is loaded with paper!

Status light indicates a paper problem. Paper try is full and no sign of paper stuck inside the printer.

Could be a few things:
Try poking a small screwdriver in the bottom of the tray to manually lift the paper. If that works, you probably have a gear problem - see the post titled, "Status light is red and paper light blinking"

If that doesn't work, put some paper in the MP tray and test print (hit GO button 3x). If that works, you have a problem with the paper pickup and might require some parts (hard to find). Inside the drive unit (frame L) is a little circuit board (relay front PCB). As you try to print, check voltage on pins 1-2, it should cycle to activate a solenoid. If you get a voltage cycle, your solenoid is probably bad - if not, your relay front PCB is probably bad.

A solid red STATUS light with a solid yellow TONER light indicates toner out...replace according to pg. 63 in the manual.
It can also indicate a cartridge position error. Take the DRUM UNIT out of the machine and re-install.

A solid red STATUS light only means:

Front cover open
Fuser cover open
Dust on drum
Too many trays
Buffer error
Print overrun
Memory full
Download full
Font full

See pg.48 ofthe manual.

Red light on steady

If the ink light is on steady red, that means the black or color ink cartridge is nearly empty. Obtain a replacement black or color ink cartridge. To know which cartridge is out of ink, check the ink levels using EPSON Status Monitor 3 (Windows) or EPSON Status Monitor (Macintosh). If you just replaced the cartridges before you got the error light, that means that the replacement cartridge is not recognized by your printer. Please reseat cartridges. Then turn the printer on and off. The cartridges maybe bad also.
If the paper light is on steady red, try to reload 10-20 sheets of regular paper into your printer. When printing on CD/DVD, CD/DVD tray is not inserted in the printer. Insert the CD/DVD tray in the printer and press the paper button.Could also be that the printer has loaded more than one sheet of paper at a time. Load paper in the sheet feeder, and then press the paper button to resume printing. If the CD/DVD guide is open, close the CD/DVD guide, load paper and then press the paper button.

Paper tray is full and the paper light keeps flashing.

First check the machine for paper jams. If not, remove the paper from the paper tray and reinstall it. Then try to print from the MP tray.If this works, check paper size settings on the printer driver, or the small black arm which hangs down next to the paper pick up roller, and is the paper sensor.

Can't print from the MP tray?

When you print labels or envelopes you need to select the correct tray from the print menu. (File print or ctrl P) or the printer will think the normal paper tray is being used.

You can force the printer to change the tray after the print has been sent by pressing the continue button on the printer, just make sure that the normal tray has no paper in it.
