The following link explains step-by-step how to replace the gearcase (transmission) in a Whirlpool top loader:

This is not a difficult repair, but it can be tedious. Take you time and read through the link provided. If you have questions, please let me know.

The part number is 3360629. A replacement gearcase can be purchased at for about $145. This was the cheapest price I could find. Other sites you may try are:

I hope you find this information helpful.

NOTE: These gearcases are to be shipped in the UPRIGHT position. The instructions are on the shipping container. However, if it does get shipped lying down, sit it upright and allow it to sit for about an hour to allow the oil to settle back into the bottom. Do not forget to puncture the breather hole before installation.

Not spinning or draining, only fills and agitates

the mixing valve in the rear needs to be repaced-it controls the water flow Also sounds like the clutch of the transmision maybe be a factor if the machine doesn't spin

Not draining or spinning

There is a coupling in between the motor and transmision cost about 10 bucks if that much. Sounds like you need a new one. Flip washer on it side and look at the motor where it connects to the transmission you will see a coupling.

Washer problem

I have the same problem with mine. I am told that it is the break assembly in the transmision gone bad. Dont run it for long like that. mine just stopped working all together after about 2 weeks of making the noise.
