Question about Brother MFC 6490CW InkJet Printer

3 Answers

My brother MFC490CW is not playing nice with windows 7

When I had Windows 7 32 Bit installed on the computer, I was able to properly install the MFC 490's driver suite without any trouble, was able to check everything on the computer. When I upgraded to the 64 bit windows, I was unable to use the disk, and the printer no longer appears in a printer list when you try to set up wireless printing with the bundled software. However Windows 7 does find the printer, and I can print (but I can't check ink levels on the computer), I also had to trick the software into recognizing the scanner (the control center [software] still can't find the printer, in spite of the printer being installed and working elsewhere) but I would prefer to have it all working properly, within the control center, where I can actually check ink levels, and where it actually displays printer status. I have seen similar problems on here for other models, but so far no solutions. Please help!

I can't install my Brother MFC6490CW printer onto my laptop which has windows 7. At the setup stage an error message 0X00000704 unkown port appears. I have turned off my AVG anti-virous and my windows firewall. I have installed the printer onto my PC which has XP.

Visit the Brother website
http://www.brother-usa.com/
See if you can find an updated driver for your 64 bit Operating system . Download it and save it to your desktop. Remove the old driver then install the updated one this should fix the problem. But if you can't find an updated driver, contact Brother.

I tried the Brother website as well but nothing worked so I went to the Microsoft website and it stated that it was compatible with Windows 7, 32 and 64 bit so I started to file a report disputing this claim. As I was continued filling out the report the printer cycled on and started working. I then sent a document to the printer and everything was fine. I went back to the MS website and cancelled the report.

I downloaded printer driver for brother mfc240c, but even after install, I get a message that says the driver isn't installed.

Open the printer and scanners folder an delete all the devices (Brother Printer, Brother Fax, Brother PC-Fax if installed). Point to device an right click the mouse button.
Restart the computer.
Download the software from Brother Solutions Center. Download the whole suite not just the drivers. Make sure you select the software that is compatible with your version of the OS :Windows 7 32 bits, Windows 7 64 bits, Windows 8 32 bits, etc.
Install the software. If you are going to use a USB cable to connect the MFC to the computer, install a local USB printer. If you are going to use Ethernet network cable, install a wired network printer, and if wireless connection then install a wireless printer.
If you have problems finding or attributing an IP address to your printer (for Non-USB connections) there is Brother program that helps you attribute an IP address. You will find it on the same page as the software suite on Brother's site.

I lost my network fax and scanning when I upgraded to Win 7 as Brother had no support for Win7 and this printer. Very disappointing.

However, I recently downloaded the MFC-8370DN install package from the Brother website and installed it on my Win7 64 bit Asus laptop. The installer couldn't find my MFC8820DN, but I manually entered the IP address (192.168.0.100 in my case). The install completed cleanly, after a reboot I can now start Brother Control Centre 3 and scan and fax from my 8820DN over the network. All good, no need to buy a new printer just yet...

After doing a bit of reading, it seems the Brother MFC-240C model is discontinued. I didn't see any support for windows 7, so what we can try is changing the compatibility.

1) Uninstal the suite/drivers, then restart your computer.
2) Reinstall the suite/drivers and restart your computer once again.
3)Look for BrCtrCen.exe in the directory of where ever the suite is installed.
Should be either
C:\Program Files (x86)\Brother\ControlCenter3\BrCtrCen.exe (for 65 bit windows)
C:\Program Files\Brother\ControlCenter3\BrCtrCen.exe (For 32 bit windows)
4) Right click BrCtrCen.exe, go to compatibility options and set the compatibility to vista.

Hi i have a printer (brother MFC-235C). I changed

No there's no specific drivers for windows 7 either 32 bit or 64 bit, it'll automatically install the device with the default drivers.
details here

If there's a problem with your cartridge or cartridge ink level indicator, then you better clean the cartridge contact points and the contact points on the printer.
Good luck

Thanks for using FixYa.

We have a MFC 7440N at work. I have Windows 7. I

did you install the full suite for your printer OR just the printer drivers?
I believe if download the full suite, uninstall the old software from control panel 's add/remove programs, then reinstall the complete software you should be up and going again.
the software download is here: http://www.brother-usa.com/downloads/default.aspx?PGID=5&R3ModelID=mfc7440n
make sure you select the correct operating system as there are both 32 and 64 bit drivers. and make sure you pick the "full driver & download package.
there is also an uninstall tool at the bottom of the page to remove any older software/drivers you may have previously installed prior to installing the new software.

Click driver, then the windows that is closest to windows 7 (Vista) 32 or 64 bit, depending on what windows7 you have installed. Vista is very close to Win7 so a vista driver may well work.
So select Driver, then Windows Vista in the box below (or Windows Vista x64 Edition) depending on your current bit, then select English and then search.
On the next page click to download the Full Driver & Software Package.
This may well help you, and the drivers here will be much newer then whats on your disc, as will be the utilities.
Hope this helps you.
