Question about LG RH1999H DVD Recorder/HDD Recorder

1 Answer

My DVD recorder won't play my CDs

Simple problem - whenever I put an audio CD into the LG DVD recorder I recently bought, and select the audio cd option on the menu, it does not recognise the disk (returns 'no disk').

The player will play DVDs fine and the region appears to be set for Australia.

If anyone can tell me what I could do about this that would be great.

HELP !!!! Purchased a RH1999H in May 2007. Worked fine on all formats until now. The problem is on bought and rented DVDs, I keep getting the message "Unknown Disc".

The systen works perfectly with audio and Divx disc, but will not playback original DVDs. Please someone assist. LG USA says contact local supplier, but in SA this could take 6 months.

My DVB-T HDD/DVD Recorder DBRH197 suddenly won't recognise Region 4 DVD's. It rejects the disc with an error message "unknown disc". It may just be coincidental, but this fault started occurring directly after I tried to format a new DVD-RW disc.

I've seen quite a few similar fault reports. Is there a fix?

My LG dvd player won't play some rented dvd's either. It either doesn't recognise or it starts playing them and then half way in it will freeze.

Also would like to know if there are any solutions out there.

I have the same or worse with an LG RH277 dvd/hd recorder. It will no longer recognise commercial music CDs or any other type of CD either, even though it played several music CDs and data CDs without problem a week ago. The unit is only a month old. I have tried factory reset, and removing the power overnight without any result - I suspect the DVD Drive is faulty and will be returning it to the retailer for warranty tomorrow.

Coincidentally I just puchased a PC internal LG DVD super-multi DVD burner for my PC which uses the same drive chipset, and it had the same problem not recognising CDs (but fine with DVD media) from day 1. Also going back to the retailer for warranty.

Well, here we go! RH199H Unit, 1 mth old, is now unable to recognise and play dvd's.... ' NO DISC' - even with ones watched prior. Over the last week or so, the dvd's started freezing. Checked out the discs as thought due to scratches, but alas it seems to be the death of the unit. Excellent! Long weekend and no unit to record and watch. Trip to return unit and the warranty nightmare.

Recently purchased a unit... You can imagine the joy when I found in Manual: Audio discs can only play if in .mpg or .wma formats! Yes, all the bells and whistles except the most basic of functions such as all common audio formats. Other portable $99 dvd player works with them.

I have a 2001 Honda Crv, the cd player keeps ejecting CDs before it has the chance to load them. The radio works fine, and I gave tried burnt and original disc CDs. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Are these CDs that you burned yourself? Older CD players won't recognize the audio file format of this kind of recording, only the established file format that typical retail CDs have used for years. In recent years, CD players have been developed to recognize more file types than just the old format; but with an older player like you have in your car, it wouldn't recognize what you were trying to play, as if you put a DVD in. It balks, and spits it out. You can burn CDs with the correct file format, you just need the appropriate software or file translator.

Which disc can be used to recrord on ?

According to the user manual, the following DVD media you can record with this unit are:

RECORDING: TYPES OF DISCS YOU CAN USE FOR RECORDING

DVD+R 2.4x, 4x, or 8x ONLY; DVD+RW 2.4x and 4x ONLY.

NOTES:
It is NOT possible to record on CD-R or CD-RW discs.
IMPORTANT: It is NOT possible to record content that is copy-protected. This is usually true for most pre-recorded DVD discs and most pre-recorded VHS tapes.

PLAYBACK: TYPES OF DISCS YOU CAN PLAY

DVD discs - DVD movie discs (DVD-ROM); DVD+R; DVD+RW; DVD-RW (must be recorded using video mode or VM); DVD-R (must be recorded using video mode or VM and must be finalized).
CDs (Audio CDs, CD-R, CD-RW) - Audio CDs contain musical or sound content only. mp3 discs are CDs (CD-R or CD-RW)
that contain mp3 files. This product also plays CDs that contain JPEG files and Multisession CDs.
Video CD (VCD) and Super Video CD (S-VCD) discs - Like DVD video discs, VCDs contain picture and sound content. The difference is the amount of information that can be stored on the disc.
VCDs typically have lower picture and sound quality than DVD discs.
Super Video CDs (S-VCDs) can be used to record up to 70 minutes of digital sound and video, with MPEG-2 standard video and MPEG-1 standard audio-but you must use DVD+R or DVD+RW discs to record on your DVD/VCR not S-VCDs.
Additionally, S-VCD disc compatibility is dependent on which MPEG coding software, disc design software, and disc writer software are used; and the discs themselves.

(The above information is extracted from the user manual for this particular model and is a guide only)

I find it very strange that the user manual does not provide any information about DVD-R recording since this is a DVD recorder. I guess you could try those types of discs in it, otherwise it will playback finalised DVD-R discs recorded/burned in another machine.

I assume you have the original manual for this unit. If not, you may be able to download it free from various sites. (retrevo may have it but they may ask you for email address prior to downloading)

I hope the above information helps a tiny bit with regard to DVD formats for this unit.

The player only intermittently recognizes CDs inserted; it does not seem to make any difference whether they are commercial, recorded at home, etc. Sometimes it says "insert disk," sometimes "no disk." ...

LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM T10N ATA DRIVE

Various issues can cause drives to occasionally balk at writing optical discs. These run the gamut of physical, hardware, and software troubles.

Inappropriate or dirty media may be to blame. Make sure to match the type of recordable disc to the drive, and check each disc for fingerprints or other contaminants. If a disc is dirty, wipe it with a clean, soft cloth in a straight line from the center hole outward. Try a quality optical drive cleaning disc if you suspect dust contamination on the drive’s laser lens.

Some discs don’t perform well with certain drives, even within their rated speeds. Try recording at a slower speed and then with a different brand of disc. Also, on PCs, verify that the temporary file storage area on the hard drive used by the burning software has enough free, defragmented space. Allocate at least 5GB for a DVD (9GB for a double-layer [DL] disc) and about 1GB for CD burning.
