First don't format floopy otherwise it erases all data.
Check in your other computer that your portable driver working fine may it has some hardware issue.
So try your floopy in other floopy drive on which other floopy works fine.

Let me know if you need more assistanse.

I was following online instructions to change the format on my external to FAT32 for PS3. " if the file system type is 'NTFS" right click and select "Delete Partition or Delete...

Probably not ... FAT32 (File Allocation Table - 32 (bit)) is an older method (Upgrade of FAT16) than NTFS (New Technology File System) which was introduced on 'professional' machines that came with the NTFS, so called NT4 (following Windows 3.11 ) operating system.

Anytime you delete the material on your drive, it can be recovered. Cheaply is not a word typIcally used in this process. Typically, what one hears when taking about hard drives and files it MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A BACK UP.

this device is plug and play does not need any type of configuration basically you plug the device and the server (PC) would usually recognize it as the "A" unit

New Dell Internal / External USB Floppy Drive 1.44Mb

It would appear that you may need to do a couple of things in order to restore the drive back to normal. I would disconnect the drive using the icon provided to this effect and doing it after the message says it's safe to disconnect it.
If the message says differently, I would still disconnect it, unles you're in the middle of writing, which you're not.
Upon reconnecting the drive, should the condition persist, I would recycle the laptop and try again. It does not make sense that a disk that you recently read from to burn a CD is no longer readable, unless the mechanism inside the drive had collected debris that caused the data on your floppy to be ruined. That would be an unfortunate disaster.
If rebooting the laptop still fails to read the disks, then try blowing any dust or dirt from inside the drive using one of those small canisters of compressed air that people use to clean their keyboards and other devices and try again.
Should the condition persist, try loading the floppy disks on another system to see whether they've been ruined by your drive.
If they are readable, then the drive would appear to be deffective.
Good luck!

WD My Book Essential keeps asking me to format

There are two main reasons why this could be happening. Vista will ask you to scan/format any portable or flash drive the first time you plug it in as it prefers you use it's newer version of NTFS but it's not required. If this is the case there is an option on that pop-up window to continue without repairing the drive and it will work fine once you select that.

The other major possibility is that the drive was active at the time of the crash and that the file tables were damaged at that time. If this is the case your file are almost always still there but windows hasn't a clue where to find them, it's like somebody shot the librarian and you don't know the name of the book you want.

If it is the second problem you have a couple options depending on how bad the damage is.

1. Try the program"Get My Data Back" it's a bit amateurish but works well on deleted files and minor drive damage.

2. Send your drive to a pro(try one first if you like), there are a few good places in North America that offer cost effective recoveries on minor problems like this generally $100-$200, but it can be more if the damage is more extensive. Armor-IT Data Recovery has adverts in each US state and can be search in FixYa's Database, or on Google if option one doesn't work.

Hope this helps FixYa

Maxtor Basics portable 320gb Mac to pc compatability problems

Hi Tys,

I had a similar issue with my Maxtor Basics portable 500GB drive. I hadn't formatted mine yet, but had heard there were issues, so decided to find out before I start. I even saw your post here looking for an answer. Finally, one of my friends told me the following solution, which worked fine for me:

Don't format the drive as any of the Mac OS Extended options, simply reformat it as MS-DOS (it should be one of the options in Disk Utilities when you choose Erase and go to the Volume Format dropdown list).

Your Mac should be able to recognise and use the drive in this format and it works for PCs. Transferring files between the two shouldn't be a problem.

A thing to note, though, is that these Maxtor drives apparently come ready-formatted as MS-DOS (mine did). But while my Mac recognised the drive, I couldn't copy files on to it. If this happens, erase this MS-DOS formatting with... MS-DOS. Don't ask me why this works, I'm not a Mac Genius, but now my Maxtor is trouble-free and can transfer files from PC to Mac and back again.

Hope this works out for ya!

Sounds like you have a bad drive or the disk is corrupted. Did you try a different floppy disk to see if the drive is functioning?

Transfer WMA files to Sansa c250

There two types of WMA file - protected and unprotected (also called "DRM-free" and "DRM-encrypted"). Some protected or encrypted WMA's may allow you to play back on your computer, but will not allow you to play those same files on an mp3 player. There are only two ways around your problem - one is expesnive, and one is illegal:
1) You can purchase additional rights on Overdrive to transfer your audiobooks to a "portable device" (by which, they include mp3 players).
2) You can download a program such as Tunebite to strip the Overdrive of it's DRM license, rendering the file of its protection (I would NOT reccomend this route).

The WMA files that you had that worked before were either unprotected, or were protected but had transfer rights.

Can't transfer data files

I called Sansa and I was instructed to format my player. The steps were as follows:
1)Connect player to computer
2)Go to my computer and right click on your player
3) Click format on the menu

This will start the formatting of the player. After this I was fine. This is the 2nd time I have had to do this in a year and all I put on this player are books.

******Please Note**** This process will erase any files you have on your mp3 player.
