Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Open Question

Lawnmower will not engage blades

I have a Great Dane ZTR lawnmower. Ocassionally, after I have been mowing for a period of time and then cut the blades off, they won't engage until the mower has sufficient time to cool down. The blades are activated by an electric clutch. The dealership where I bought the mower is flooded with idiots that can't figure out what the problem is. Mowing is a considerable part of my income and this little problem is beginning to drive me crazy. If anyone can help I would be very appreciative.

Hi Have they adjusted the electric clutch at all, If not heres how to adjust it, First of all you will need a 10 thou feeler gauge now on the side of the clutch you will find 3 holes put the feeler gauge in and check the clearence if it is too wide you can adjust by tightening the three nuts on the outer edge but you have to adjust and check all 3 sides. If this does not work then i would be looking at the amperage/volts system on the engine it may not be producing enough when hot.

It depends on whether its a lever or pushbutton engage model? it may be a broken belt or a simple wire connection come loose. If you want to stay friends tell them mowers are repairable/replaceable but friends arent!

My blade will not stay engaged to mow. how do I fix the problem?

When you say will not stay engaged you are saying that it comes on then cuts off ? If you turn on the PTO and it engages and the mower is not moving does the PTO stay engaged and for how long (if OK then need to check connections for PTO ) . If it is not engaging at all then we have to look at interlocks / safety switches . Give me some Details

To mulch my grass clippings, do I have to use the side discharge or can I simply remove the bag and insert the rear plug?

Insert the rear plug if mulching is desired. The key to mulching is to mow the lawn frequently. You want to keep the mower deck height high enough to cut the grass and allow the mulching blades to work, but just low enough to actually cut the grass in a smooth uniform height. To low of a cut setting will clog the mower and create a mess. 2 times a week is a good frequency to start with.

I have a husqvarna 172 ride-on lawnmower. Running

This unit probably has a safety switch built into it and it could be below the gas tank. If this switch isn't adjusted properly then it's designed to cut off the motor. I think you should concentrate on that before attempting anything else.

Swisher lawnmower wont mow

Yes It would. The belt doesn't just wear it slackens also. It will probably turn the blades when not under load but as soon at it attempts to cut grass there is not enough grip.
Replace the belts first and it should be fine.
