Have i been conned by my local technician?

I think he is correct, the fuse will blow if magnetron is faulty and the magnetron unit will look burned but not the casing that's why there is a fuse to stop the microwave catching fire, take a tip from me it's usually cheaper to buy a new microwave than a new replacement magnetron, the only cheaper way is try and get a used magnetron but then you run the risk of reliability issues it's totally up to your personal choice

My microwave oven just stopped cooking. The light comes on and the Motor is running, but much louder than normal.

The magnetron in your microwave has probably gone out. The magnetron is the part of the microwave oven that produces microwaves. If you unit is a built in model, it will likely cost more to fix than a new one. Same thing goes for a countertop unit.

does the light still come on and the plate turns round but no heat? if this is the case your looking at a new magnetron its the device which generates microwave radiation in other words the heat either that or may possibly be the high voltage fuse has blown if its jus the fuse it will be worth fixing if its the magnetron go buy a new microwave there cheap as chips these dayz

I was heating my tea and I heard a loud pop and the unit turned off...I thought I had blown a fuse and went out and checked fuse box..flipped all fuses and microwave still not turning on at all...micorwave...

The description you provide indicates the magnetron has failed, "heats food" and blown the main fuse in the microwave oven, since the unit is 10 years old it is much cheaper to replace with a new one rather than have it repaired.

The fuse blew on my emerson microwave oven and I replaced it. This fuse has now blown. What would be causing this? Thanks....Lee

Usually what happenes is the magnetron is dead, or is dieing. It is using too much power due to overheating, or it is just worn. This is a common thing for older microwaves. take the case back off, and clean the fins on the magnetron this will fix the overheating problem. Be careful. let your microwave sit for about an hour after being plugged in. This lets the capacitors that store dangerous voltages leak off. also make sure the new fuses are ceramic fuses that are rated for 15 amps at 250VAC Do not use glass fuses! You can find a new magnetron on ebay, or on the internet some where. You will need a DAEWOO 2M218H MFI magnetron. I just tore my microwave apart, and realized I have an exact replacement for it. I just swapped them out and they both work. cool. but yeah. that's what is most likely causing it. Good luck!

Fan works, light works, timer counts down when you press start button no action? doesnt cook?

This is a problem associated with the magnetron. Either the power supply (transformer, diode, capacitor) or the magnetron itself. UNPLUG, remove cover, check for burn marks, a blown fuse, and test all components. Likely you have a bad magnetron (test for low resistance lead to lead, infinite either lead to ground). I found a new magnetron, removed from freight damaged oven, online for about $40. Mine is a built in which would cost $300+ to replace, so it was worth fixing. I hope this helps you.

New GE Magnetron. Where does this new HV diode go?

Fixed it. There was a back capacitor fuse (I believe that's what it's called) on the old magnetron. I removed it and put it on the new magnetron. The HV diode is on the big silver capacitor and very easy to replace. I just didn't see it. It was definitely the magnetron and I hope that this new one comes with a warranty for 5 more years.
