If you are in Manual Mode and you set your shutter speed too higher (ie above 250th sec) the shutter blind passes over the sensor when the flash goes off causing a dark section in the photo. Lower the shutter speed to get a better sync. Some camera's default sync speed is 1/60th of a second and sometimes user adjustable.

Remember the longer the shutter speed, the more light will register in the photo. Also boosting the ISO will help extend the flashes range and also record more ambient light for a more pleasing and balanced photo.

Mainly with Sky back gounds of blue there are dark spots appearing on the picture which are not due to marks on the lens. On Lighter sky photographs they are not as noticable or disappear. Change the lens...

The spots are dust on your sensor. You can clean these yourself but you must learn the techniques first. Google the words...cleaning a DSLR sensor. You will be taken to sites which will explain in detail how to do it and what supplies you will need. It may seem daunting at first, but it is really easy once you know how.

My minolta maxxum 7d won't take a picture....The shutter will push down but no picture will be taken. I tried it later in the day then it worked. Now today I tried, it worked this morning and then not...

Precision Camera picked up the responsibility for fixing the 7D and 5D Konica-Minolta cameras when Sony bought out K-M. I contacted them when my 7D wasn't functioning, and sent them my camera. Fortunately, on of the problems was "First Frame Black". Precision completely refurbished my camera and returned it to me in better than new condition. Sony picked up the full cost for the total refurbishing; all I paid was the shipping cost to Precision. I might add that my 7D was not in warranty. The URL for Precision Camera is:

Dark Picture

I am assuming the following two things.

1. The part was indoors.
2. You are using the 18-135 mm lens with the Nikon D80.

The problem with shooting indoors is that not enough light goes in through the lens to the filter. Solutions:

1. Use the flash with every shot. In case there is not flashlight available, use the on board flash. Press the top button behind the barrel on the camera. It has a lighting icon. It will pop open the flash. If you are in 'P', 'A', 'S' mode, the camera will sync the shutter speed with flash. If the camera is on auto mode (The green camera icon) the flash will pop up and fire by itself.

2. Use the lens with with lowest f stop, i.e. with bigger aperture.

3. Increase ISO. You ought to get usable photographs right up to 800. To change ISO, press the button on the back of the camera which says 'ISO' (Second button from bottom) and turn the primary command dial simultaneously to change ISO setting. Higher ISO speed = Lower shutter speed (But less clarity too).

Hope it helps.

Cannot get wireless flash mode to work on my 7D

It is not operator error. I had a similar experience and spent days pulling my hair out trying to figure out the problem.

Unfortunately, the 5400HS is NOT compatible with the 7D. Only to 3600HS(D) and 5600HS(D) are.

The problem stems from the fact that the digital cameras cannot to TTL (real-time) flash metering and have to rely on pre-flash instead.

Because of this, Minolta updated the control protocol to include a signal to tell the flash to pre-flash. Unfortunately, only the two newer flashes recognise and respond to this new signal.

I spent weeks trying various things to get around this, but with no joy. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your 5400HS just will not work properly with the 7D either wirelessly or when attached to the camera.

Matt.

Shoots blank (dark) pictures after switching on.

This is a known design defect in the cameras and Sony is repairing them, even if your warranty is expired.

see this for Konica Minolta's official statement:

it'll direct you to a sony page where you can sign up to get your camera repaired!
