Memorex MVD2042 says root

I wish someone had figured out the solution, because my DVD player, which has worked just fine in the past, now says root. On my first ten or so attempts, it seemed to be playing, but there was neither picture nor sound. The last five or so attempts, all it says is root. The manual is totally silent on this situation. The troubleshooting guide doesn't mention the possibility.
