Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

My refrigerator is a GE model PDS22SCRBRSS when plugged in it makes a clicking noise and the light blinks in sync with the clicking about 1 time per second. It also doesn't get cold. An FixYa expert said it was probably a locked up compressor, but he gave not advice on how to test that. I would like to troubleshoot this problem so I know exactly what is wrong, but I need advise on how to test it. I also would like advise on how to fix it myself, which was the reason I signed up for this site. The compressor is 3 months past the 5 year warranty based on the mfg date.

Thanks. I will test the compressor. If it is faulty I will probably post a new question about what to do next.

Hi and welcome back to FixYa,

On your query "..how to test it (compressor).." and confirm whether it is at fault, to try are:

  • use a clamp ammeter to determine if the current exceeds the rated starting current; and /or
  • disconnect power leads to the compressor and allow it to cycle through. If the relay clicks on and the light no longer blinks, then you have verified a faulty compressor.
Good luck and thank you for asking again FixYa.

What's your problem?GE Model # GDL20KCSABS clicking sound Clicking sound

The clicking noise would generally be the overload on the compresser. Which means the compresser is locked up and unable to pump and needs to be replaced. Sorry You can install a 3in1 hard start which may free the compresser rotor and give you a little more time out of it but will need to be replaced eventually Good luck

I have a ge bottom freezer and now it is making a clicking noise and the temp lights are blinking in rythem with the clicking noise

Had the same problem on my GE bottom freezer fridge. It finally died a few days ago. The clicking came from a relay on the main circuit board under a access cover on the back of the fridge. Ordered a new circuit card from GE ($157.50 + ship/handeling), replaced it, and the fridge works great. I have an electronics background but if you take your time and are safe, I think anybody would be able to change it.

Side by side stopped working but clicling noises every second two.

Ok the motherboard is malfunctioning. Ive observed this exact problem before. Replace the board and all will be normal again. If you keep lettig it click and click it may finally kill that relay that you descibed to me or even worse the compressor itself.
