Unless you have a bad USB cable then the problem is the canon software or utilities.
Unplug the USB cable and reboot the computer. Plug it in and the camera and see if ti is now recognized. If not then reinstall your canon utilities from the cd. That should fix everything. You may have to uninstall them first then reboot and reinstall before everything co-operates.
Without the canon drivers the computer doesn't know what the camera is or how to talk to it. It should come up with something like unrecognized device or it just ignores it.

The camera doesn't always take pictures when I press the button. This problem is about a week old. If I keep closing and opening the shutter, it sometimes will take the picture.
