Briggs and Stratton 20hp twin cylinder runs only with full choke

The engine will only run fully choked, removing the choke will cause the engine to die. It seems as though the fuel supply is restricted. I checked the function of the choke, seems to be working correctly. I replaced the fuel filter, no change. The engine has approximately 80 hours on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Had one on my saw mill had this problem as well Try pulling bowl off bottom of carby as the float can get **** with old fuel especially ethanol fuels as they attract water bowl is normally held on with one center screw on bottom of carby. Note always turn fuel off and let engine run out of fuel as this stops goop from building up in carby

Thanks for the help - found the problem it was a perished fuel pipe between the pump and the carb, the inner rubber pipe was causing a blockage where it was slightly bent. new piece of hose and now all OK

running rich will make it run colder.....I wouldn't run it anymore til you find theproblem, it will burn your valves. air leak in your intake/carb is more than likely your problem , check for cracks in the intake manifold , leaking gaskets

I had problems with my 20hp v twin. The fuel was the problem.I stopped using fuel with ethanol.Problem solved. My 60 hp Evinrude had the same problem.Ethanol was responsible for eating away gaskets and o-rings.This stuff also eats away at some aluminum carbs. Thanks congress for voting to add this **** to our fuel.Wish you would pick up the repair bills too.

My Briggs 18 hp v-twin is starved for fuel. It

A more likely cause is a clogged jet in the carb.

Remove disassemble and clean Carb, the High speed idle jet is clogged.

If you had a fuel pump problem it would not run even in the Choke mode.

This tends to happen when an engine sets for long periods of time with out a fuel inhibitor id is even more likely to happen if you use fuel with ethanol.

Hope this tip helps.

Hard to start lawn tractor

I have 2009 lawn tractor that will not start (from day 1) unless I use a small squirt
of start fluid into the air cleaner area. Nothing else seems to work. The battery will run down before it starts. Once engine is warm it starts great. Love the tractor,
hate the starting problem. Elevation is not a problem in michigan.

Have a 20hp vanguard on a go-devil long tail motor. engin runs at idle speed then when i put the propeller into the water it stalls. if i pull the choke and give full throttle it will run some and backfire

These engines seem to have problems maintaining the correct valve lash settings. try taking the valve covers off and checking the valve/pushrod clearance.on tdc compression stroke it should be .001-.003 clearance. then check exhaust stroke tdc on exhaust stroke. clearance should be same on the other valve then. hope this cures your problem.

21hp intek v-twin runs only with choke on full

You are not getting enough fuel.... by choking it you are enriching the mixture with less air , more fuel. Some where in the fuel system or carbureator something is still plugged.Or the mixture screw is too far in.
