I finally found the answer in the instruction manuel. I didn't know the card had a lock slot on it. Moved it to open and it worked.

If this is an old card, it may be corrupted. Try a new one. Be sure to format the new one in the camera before using it.

Use the menu to unprotect the image then you can delete. Also you can format the card but that will remove all the images on the card so make sure you've saved it elsewhere.

Have canon rebel xs , getting card write protected error

If this is a Canon Rebel XS there is no memory card in a 35mm film camera If this is a Rebel XSi then generally this error is caused by the memory card lock switch here is a diagram to show the correct orientation of this switch

Also after you have unlocked the card you should format the memory card in the camera it is going to be used in. Failing to do so may produce other errors and possibly corrupt pictures and files Formatting clean the memory card to produce optimum performance between the camera and card

Memory card full now it says it is not formatted. it will not let download pics

Try using a card reader to download your pics. After that always format the memory card in your camera using its built in format program never format using your computer.

Camera says "card write protected"

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

My Canon Rebel xs is telling me my card write is protected? How do I turn that function off?

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

If that doesn't do it, try a different card and see what happens.

Card protected

Use a separate card reader to download your pics. Then, you can format the card in the camera to get it to work properly.

Canon Rebel eos is locked on Card protected. How do I unlock it? The tab on the card is set to unlock and the card works in another camera.

Does the card contain pictures shot on another camera? If so, that could be your problem. Download those and format the card in your camera.

Can't un-protect Images in My Canon Rebel XS

It sounds like the locking switch on the side of the SD card is in the "locked" position. Remove the card from the camera and slide the tiny switch on the card to the unlocked position. That should do it.
