Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

1 Answer

I had to reinstall the OS for my Insprion 6000 using the dell system CD. I downloaded drivers for the Broadcomm Ethernet controller and the Intel PRO wireless from the dell website and installed them as well as the chipset driver and other necessary drivers. I can connect to my DSL router with either the Broadcomm or the wireless but it doesn't establish a default gateway or an IP address. If I run ipconfig it says "Media disconnected" under network controller but under "Network Connections" in windows it says it's connected and it says the devices are installed properly in the control panel. There's nothing wrong with the dsl other computers on my network work fine. Maybe I haven't installed something but I don't know what that would be.

the other computers use DHCP and that's really what the laptop needs to do to because i need to be able to take it other places

Hi there

Does this issue of Media disconnected and not acquiring an IP happen with both the wired and wireless connections?

Please confirm.

Thanks. It seems to be an issue with the computer not being able to use DHCP to automatically acquire an IP from the router.

Do you know whether your other PCs use DHCP or statically assigned IP addresses?

I would try to set the IP address manually for this computer for either connection and see if it works that way.

If that doesn't work, the router may not support auto-negotiation. I would then try to set the duplex speed for each card to 10 Mbps Full duplex (or try them all until it can acquire an address automatically).

If you're unsure how to do any of the above, let me know.

In my experience this really does sound like a duplex issue.

    Please try:

    1. Control Panel > Network Connections

    2. Go to the Properties for say the wired connection

    3. Click Configure...

    4. Go to the Advanced tab

    5. Look for something like Speed and Duplex

    6. Change it from what it is to 10 Mb Half duplex and OK the settings

Ensure DHCP is enabled if you haven't changed it, and see if it connects now with an address. If it doesn't, try !0 Mb Full duplex. Keep testing each one until one acquires an IP.

In most cases like this, this will help.

From the above link you can download the required drivers. There are two drivers available for Broadcom and Intel. I suggested try the Intel Drivers (as your system may be having the Intel based Ethernet)

Possess dell inspiron 6000 centino wireless, need drivers and xp

You can contact Dell Technical Support and see if they will send you a new XP CD. All the drivers can be downloaded at for that system. If you can't get Dell to replace the CD, try Ebay. Here is an Example:

Wireless internet problem

I think your Operating System (OS) software installed after formatting does not have drivers for the wireless network card.

You did not provide any clues about the OS and the Network (Model/Brand) installed.

Dell Inspiron 6000 did ship with Windows XP as the Default OS and Dell Wireless 1350, 1370, 1450,1390, 1490, and 1500 series Mini Card or Intel PRO Wireless 2200BG, 2915ABG Wireless LAN Mini Cards as options

First, check the Original System Configuration to find out the built specification of the Inspiron 6000.
Enter you system tag. Click on the Original System Configuration Tab. Check the factory built specification and note the Wireless Card installed from the factory. If you have not changed or upgraded the Wireless Card, download and install the drivers from the list below.

Dell Wireless 1350, 1370, 1450,1390, 1490, and 1500 series Mini Card Drivers
Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG / 2915ABG Wireless LAN Mini Card Drivers

I am almost sure you will need drivers for the Chipset, onboard network and video.
Intel Mobile Chipset
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller Driver v.4.25
Video (as above check the factory spec if you ordered the ATI MobilityRadeon X300)
Intel Graphics Video (onboard) Driver v.
ATI MobilityRadeon X300 Driver v.8.162-050803a2-025823C

Let me know how you get on.
