this could be either a bad pressure switch, located behind the control panel. it has a small usually black hose running down to the tub. more than likely since this is an older machine the hose has become worn in one spot and is leaking air. replace the hose and that shold do it. if not its the presasure switch.

SOURCE: Normal wash cycle- tub fills (?), then comes a loud hummmm and nothing happens. I noticed water level didn't reach heater coil and added water until limiter switch clicked. Still just a loud hummmm. M
You are an expert enough reading this. But with a terrible complicated dishwasher. First clear the waterlevel problem.
Rest is a result. You do not need me, join us. Next time buy something more plain.

The water-level switch regulates your washer's fill volume. This switch is usually a diaphragm device with a small, clear tube attached between the switch and the bottom of the washer's outer tub. As the water level in the tub increases, the pressure on the air in the tube increases. When the pressure reaches a certain level, it activates the switch, shuts off the water, and signals the timer to begin the agitate cycle. If the switch is defective, it may prematurely signal the water to shut off. If so, you probably need to replace the water-level switch.

I HAVE AN ATLANTIS MAYTAG WASHER . I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND I SOLVED AS FOLOLWS. REMOVED THE MOTOR, I APPLIED GENERAL PURPOSE GREASE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SLIDING MOTOR SURFACE PLATE (MOTOR BASE) . THE GRASE HELPS THE MOTOR TO SLIDE BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW THE MOTOR DOES NOT HAVE ANY ADJUSTMENT. TRY IT PLEASE . GOOD LUCK
