Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

Had to reinstall my OS, now I can't use the internet

Had to reinstall my OS, now I don't have networking, it will connect to the router but won't get a default gateway address... I can't surf the internet. it's a dell inspiron 6000

I downloaded the Broadcom network drivers and the Intel PRO wireless drivers from the dell website and installed them. that part works, it connects to the router fine.

when you run ipconfig it says "media disconnected" under network controller and there's no IP address or default gateway.

other computers on that router work fine

I'm going to suggest something simpler for you to try...may work, may not work....Go to start > Run > type "msconfig" in the box and hit enter. When the window opens make sure the computer is on NORMAL startup. If it is good, close window and let the computer reboot. When it reboots and the DELL spkash screen shows strike the F8 key repeatedly until you see a screen filled with startup options. Scroll to "Safe mode with networking" and select that, hit enter and let the system boot. when it boots completely, check if you can get online...if youcan, browse around a bit a check a few different sites. If you can, then reboot the computer back to normal windows start up and try to get online.

My Nintendo won't connect to the internet

Make sure there aren't any firewalls on your network. Try standing closer to the router when you try to connect. If these don't help you should contact nintendo customer support.

Hi,
you can do a quick troubleshooting on the laptop.
1. used another network cable and check that no pins are broken on the laptop.
2. go to device manager and remove the network adapter and reinstall it.

if this don't work. if you have a wireless router, you can connect to the internet over the wireless network adapter on the laptop.

good luck!!

Try:
sudo route add default gw ROUTER.IP.ADDRESS
Replace ROUTER.IP.ADDRESS with the address of your network router. If you don't know what this is, do the following in Windows XP:
Start -> Run -> cmd.exe
ipconfig
(look for "Default Gateway", and write down the four numbers - usually something like 192.168.1.254 - that's what you should use for "ROUTER.IP.ADDRESS" above).

This will fix it for your current session - to make it permanent, open up the network configuration window in Ubuntu, and set this as your gateway under "IPv4 settings" (or similar).

I would check out the Internet for the updated driver for the NIC in the suspect machine, download it on another machice, copy over with flash disk. Remove the driver, install the new driver, **** down, reboot. If there is nothing physically wrong with the machine and you just re-installed the OS, sounds like you have a corrupted device driver for you NIC.

Cannot connect to internet.

Since better than half of my customers use a Cable modem and I sell Netgear routers, this ought to be a piece of cake :-)

It sounds like one of your computers is working fine, and the one you reformatted doesn't. Is it Vista and did you get the drivers for the network card? Whovever reinstalled the OS should have done the drivers, but if they didin't, you'll probably have to go to the computer maker's web site and get them for your particular machine.

It's fairly easy to tell, because if you plug a cable into the network card and it either doesn't light up or is not detected, you don't have drivers or you have other issues. If you somehow do, then you can click on the Control Panel and Network and see the LAN card. It will either be enabled, disabled, or not there.

Once you get it to where you can see the network, now you can go about configuring the connection. I'm betting on missing drivers, but if you have any more questions, feel free to comment back.

Does it say limited connection to network? You're connecting it through a wireless router right? Do you see your wireless router when you search for networks?
I had similar problem with my previous Dell laptop. Wireless use to work untill one day it just stopped, found the networks, but kept giving me limited connection whenever i tried to connect. I found out the problem is linked with the driver. Dell laptop i had was also on XP OS.
Maybe try reinstalling the drivers. After I formatted my computer and reinstalled drivers, it started working again.
Hope this helps.
