Question about Maytag Neptune MDG9700A Gas Dryer

Motor's burnt out!

I also had to have the drum replaced (only had the neptune dryer less than 2 years). And I agree...it's a piece of garbage. Hope there is a recall. Heard (by Howard's where I purchased my Neptune0, that Maytag is no longer in business and they are not honoring their warranty, but Howard's is the warranty. And thankfully, I purchased the 5 year warranty. But now it seems like my motor is burnt out. I mean, what's next? The motor if it turns on at all, is slow and sounds like it has mechanical issues and smells like a motor is burning.

I truly regret buying this product. And at that price you would think you're buying quality. I've had better luck with a cheapie 400 dollar one. Oh well, live and learn never buy MAYTAG!

Maytag Neptune MDE3000AYW. The start button on my dryer went out. It tried to start and then died and smelled burnt. I am guessing the switch burned up. Any thoughts on how to fix it? Thanks

sounds like motor is in a bind see if you can rotate drum by hand if you cant then your belt is hung up,or a belt pully is bad,if drum turns freely, sound like motor is going bad

My maytag neptune dryer will not stay running and sometimes will not start at all. We cleaned all the vents out . It is a Maytag Neptune MD55

Try this (you may need two people):
1. Open the dryer door and locate the door switch. While pushing the door switch in, have someone else push the start button.
2. You'll hear the noise. Keep pushing both buttons and take your other hand, reach in side and grab one of the drum fins and manually push the drum in a clockwise direction.
3. The drum may take off on its own. BE CAREFUL TO REMOVE TO HAND QUICKLY TO NOT GET BUMPED BY THE FINS AS THEY BEGING TO ROTATE.
If it does not start, the motor needs to be replaced. If it is still under full warranty, simply call a repairman.
If this works, turn the dryer off, close the door and try to start it again just by pushing the start button. If it works, it may have been something obstructing the drum from turning. OR, the motor could be going out. It may continue to start on its own for an unkown period of time, a day, a week, and year. But eventually it will go out and will need replaced.
Replacing the motor is a bit involved, but if you want to attempt it I can walk you through it.
There should be a 5 YEARS warranty on the motor, so you might consider a repairman. Make sure they are Amana certified and there will be no cost to you for the motor. The labor, however, may be up to you and could be expensive.

I'm willing to assist you on whatever you decide.

Best, G

How do I access dryer drum for neptune dryer

take the door screws off and take the opposite side screws off lift out the door, grab the vertical pieces of the front panel and twist them away from the opening while you pull out, then lean the panel forward about 2 feet and lift the panel up and out, this gives you access to the lint screen housing and the blower wheel and housing and eventually the entire heating element and belt, drum, motor etc. unplug this thing before you work on it !!! it will zap you !!

Maytag Neptune gas dryer with cracked drum

Not sure what the cost of a new drum is, but yesterday I fixed one. I took a chance and bought one of these dryers with a crack for $70 on Craig's list. Not an easy job, but if your handy, know what your doing, and have the tools you can get the job done in about 3 hrs. Here's how:

Disconnect the dryer and move it to a space where you have plenty of room to work. Remove the drum belt from the motor, noting how the belt goes through the belt tentioner and motor. The drum comes out the front, once the front is removed. Be gentle and you'll have the drum out in less than 30 minutes. Be very careful with all wiring and connectors. Gently remove the felt edging at least 8 to 12 inches away from the crack. It is glued to the drum. Use some duct tape from the opposite side of the drum to hold it way from the crack. Next position the crack together as closely as you can, and hold it together with a set of vice-grips on the outermost edge. Using an ACETYLENE torch (not normal propane) and brass brazing rod with flux start near the inside/center of the drum and work your way out toward the edge. Take your time, use lots of heat, and make sure the brazing sticks. I rested my drum on a metal trash barrel so it was up in the air and I could braze it comfortably. Next find a piece of stainless steel. I used a hose clamp. Verify it's truly stainless by seeing if it sticks to a magnet. A stainless should just barely attach. Very few hose clams are truly stainless. You can also use a piece of old kitchen sink, or cut a piece off a stainless dog bowl, moulding, etc. I cut off the end on the hose clamp, and positioned the strap of the clamp on the outside of the drum, perpendicular to the crack about 1 inch in from the edge. I used a clamp to hold it in place. I then brazed each end of the hose clamp. Then remove the c-clamp, and do along the hose clamp to add strength to the area so it does not open up again. After your done, brazing, go back and take some time to really clean up the outside of the drum with a grinder. The drum rotates on rubber wheels which run along the outside of the drum. If you did this right the drum wheels will NOT pass over the hose clamp, but only pass over a small amount of brazing over the actual crack. This takes some skill to accomplish, but the brass brazing will never leave rust marks on the clothes. When I ran the dryer empty you could mildly hear a bump as the wheels passed over the brazing. However with a full load you don't even hear it at all. Got home with the dryer at 4:45, and had it done by 7:45. It may break again in 6 months some where else...but for now it works like a charm.

My maytag neptune gas dryer model #MDG3000AWW When I push the start button on my maytag neptune dryer it sounds like it wants to start but doesn't and then it gets this smell like something is burning?...

It sounds like the drum bearings are seizing up preventing the drum from rolling easily, and when the motor runs, it can't pull the drum belt around the drum that won't turn, so starts squealing and burning the belt.

You need to lubricate/replace the drum bearings, and replace the belt.
