Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

GE TPH21PRSM Both fridge and freezer not staying cold. About 2 months ago, freezer not staying cold. I removed back freezer panel and defrosted a block of ice. I am starting on the fridge first today. What should the "W" shaped plasstic tube look like. Should it be clear, filled with fluid, or as it is, opaquish in the bottom third of both sides? If I need to remove in/out plastic tubes, is it okay to just yank them, or is there a trick to it? Thanks. Bob

You will need to defrost again. When you do, you should see the heater at the bottom of both section of coil. They are glass tubes with a heating coil inside. I think you will find the coil broken in one or both. They are sold as a pair. ( www.partselect.com part # PS303934 @$74.41 ) Replace these. This will fix your defrost problem. If they are both good which I do think they are. You can ohm the termination thermostat, you will need to ice it down first due to it opens on the rise. It will need to be as cold as you can get it before you test it. If its good, the only thing left is the fan or timer.
P.S. the black W in the back of the fresh food section is a water restore that stores cold water for the freezer door.
Please rate solution. Thanks

GE 17.2 freezer on top fridge on bottom. Freezer is cold, but fridge is warm. Help!

Is there any frost buildup on the rear panel inside the freezer? If so you have a defrost problem of a bad defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer/ control board. If no frost then you probably have a clogged defrost drain. Remove the rear panel to access drain hole.

I'm really pissed. Ive had my fridge fixed twice and its still doing the same thing. The freezer is not self defrosting and the fridge part is not getting cold. it was fixed profressionly two months...

Either the defrost control is bad or the heater is bad, Only two things that could be happening, ice building up on the evap. coil needs to be removed by defrosts cycles, not happening. Find a better Tech.

Why isn't our refrigerator staying cold? It is staying around 50 degrees and no lower.

How to check everything

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

The coils under the freezer keep getting built up with solid ice so the fridge will not stay cold? Defrosted everything about a month ago when it happened the first time????

Hi, You will need to unplug the defrost drain hole located inside the freezer section under the evaporator coil. Remove the rear panel in the freezer and you can get to the drain. Please let me know if this helps you or if I can assist you further.

Fridge part is not cooling; freezer is frosting up

your ref. has a defrost problem.you will need to take back panel off inside freezer and take your hair dryer again and defrost the system.then you can check your heater, thermostat which is located at top of coils that were defrosted.sometimes the thermostat will pop and not allow it to go into defrost and you need to check defrost timer.
