Question about Microtek ScanMaker 5950 Flatbed Scanner

1 Answer

Solid black image with flatbed or adf

Help? I loaded and reloaded software per instructions, using scan wizard. Using Windows XP, 1 GB memory, lots of hard disk space, etc. Another older microteck scanner, with adf-700 works fine. Used it before and after trying to use the scanmaker 5950, successfully. the 5950 scanner goes through the motions of a flatbed scan and adf scanning, one or multiple pages, but all I get is a solid black image. Doesn't matter whether a preview is done or not. Tried to circumvent by using the Windows scanner and camera accessory program with XP, but get the same result. I unlocked, then relocked and unlocked the scanner again (turn knob on the bottom with a coin, as directed by the program). Power supply and usb2 cord works with different microteck scanner (adf-700). What is wrong? What can I do. Hope it is something ridiculously simple I have overlooked. My email is hacksawdc@netscape.com Thanks.

This particular scanner may not run to NTFS instructions.
Check Windows Help in my computer- for program Compatability
and try to reset the software to run as Windows 98 - it may work.

When I scan, using the ADF on my brothers mfc 6490, the resulting image is shifted, cutting off the right hand margin of the 8-1/2 x 11" scan. I am using Scansoft Paperport on my XP Pro laptop. The...

I read the whole paragraph and could not find a question, so I will try a few suggestions.
When you scan, select the option to open the scanner interface. It will give you more control on what you scan.

From the flatbed
When the scanner interface appears choose to Preview the scanned area. On the preview image click neat its border and you will see a dotted/ interrupted frame. Play with the borders of the frame to select the area. Intelligent software like Adobe Acrobat rotate the image to right it.

From the ADF
Check the alignment of the paper on the document feeder. Test the first page and see if it is correct. If it is, and all the subsequent pages have the same margins use the ADF If not, maybe you should use the flatbed.

4. if you are using windows vista or 7 try running the application as an administrator

this should work

Xerox Documate 152 - Scan quality is now V.BAD!

I would go to Xerox.com and look up their knowledge base. Here is a copy of data from their site related to this problem:

Symptom: Scanned images have poor image quality, are fuzzy, unclear, or hard to read.
Cause: There are several things that can lead to poor image quality including the scan settings, dirt on the scanner, and driver problems. Solution: Note: If you scan as a PDF file and your scans look fuzzy when viewed in PaperPort, try right clicking on the file and selecting "Open" to open them in Adobe Reader. If they display fine in Adobe Reader then there is nothing wrong with the scans, it is simply that they are not being displayed well in PaperPort.

The following solutions can help resolve poor scan quality.

Solution 1 - Adjust the scan settings

Try increasing the resolution of your scan. 300 dpi to 400 dpi should be clear for most images
  • If you are scanning in Black and White, try Grayscale or Color. Some images will not display correctly in Black and White
  • You can also try adjusting the brightness and contrast
  • Note: For information on adjusting your scan settings, refer to the user guide for your scanner
Solution 2 - Clean and Calibrate the scanner

Note: Calibration only applies to sheetfed scanners.

Use the link below for instructions on cleaning and calibrating (if applicable) your scanner:
Solution 3 - Reinstall the scanner driver Select a link below for instructions on reinstalling your scanner driver:

Not scanning or copying when using the ADF on HP laserjet 3055

Based on the assumption it's mechanically ok, check the cable connection between the document feeder and the base, if damaged or worked look it can cause errors. If it is a sensor error, check for a small bit of paper or even a staple from a prior jam.

Images upside down and backwards

The ADF does nothing more than feed the document into a position to be scanned, and has nothing to do with print issues " stripes" on print? Can you provide more details.

Typically you will find an icon near on the tray of the ADF which will display the proper orientation for the item to be scanned. If this is correct, then your software is somehow manipulating the image to a different orientation. You may want to check the scanned image before printing, and check the printer settings. More likely a printer problem, than a scanner problem as I have understood the issue thus far.

Green layer on scanned image from ADF Simplex

What model of scanner are you using? Is it white light based or RGB LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). Very rarely it may happen that the Red and Blue LEDs are not glowing may be because of loose contact, but this very rare occurence. Try reloading driver software.

How do I scan a bunch of originals from the tray and get 1 file for each page?

Loading originals to scan
Use these instructions to load originals into your device for scanning. For the best quality
scans, use the flatbed scanner. See Selecting media for the automatic document feeder
(ADF) for guidelines on choosing original documents for scanning.
Loading originals onto the flatbed scanner
1. Make sure that the automatic document feeder (ADF) input tray is free of media.
2. Lift the flatbed scanner lid.
3. Place the original document face-down on the flatbed scanner with the top, left corner of
the document at the lower-right corner of the glass.
4. Gently close the lid.
5. The document is ready to be scanned.
CAUTION To prevent damaging the device, do not allow the scanner lid to fall onto the flatbed scanner
surface. Always close the scanner lid when the device is not in use.
Loading originals into the automatic document feeder (ADF)
input tray
Note The ADF capacity is up to 50 sheets of 75 g/m2 (20 lb) media (depending on the thickness of
the media), or fewer sheets if the stack fills the ADF.
The minimum size for media in the ADF is 127 by 127 mm (5 by 5 inches). For smaller sizes
use the flatbed scanner. The maximum size for media in the ADF is 215.9 by 381 mm (8.5 by
15 inches).
1. Make sure that the flatbed scanner contains no media.
2. Close the flatbed scanner cover and put the top end of the stack of originals into the ADF
input tray, with the media stack face-up and the first page to be scanned on top of the
stack.
3. Slide the stack into the ADF input tray until it does not move any farther.
