Yes your desktop is where you need to scan. It won't scan until you have the HP scanning software up and running on your computer. When you press scan it looks for the program and in the program you tell it what kind of document, Photo, text, etc. The quality level you want to scan at, and the size. It then gives you the option to have a preview scan. The scan software should be on the install CD, but if not it's at
