Question about Garden

I have a sears 20" mower with a Tecumseh engine, model 143.344052. The mower starts on the first pull, but within a few seconds it dies. On pulling the starting rope it will start again and then die again. At first it seemed to help keep it going if I would press the primer button, but lately that does not seem to make any difference.(It has fresh gas in tank, new spark plug, no plugged breather cap, and has new air filter.) agn

No, the stalling is unrelated to whether the mower is working or not, it stalls on the driveway as you start it up. (This, of course, is a small push mower and not a riding mower.) Will be happy to provide any other symptoms that would help in your diagnosis. agn

Yes,it seems almost self-evident that the engine is fuel starved. Do we know if these symptoms are common to this model Tecumseh engine with carburetor part # 632086? Also, the engine starts immediately after being primed. Then it stops, but it will immediately start again and again WITHOUT BEING PRIMED. How come?? agn

Ginko, I don't mean to labor this, but your reply implies that I have a much larger engine as on a riding mower. As I mentioned in earlier exchanges, this is just a little engine on a small 20" push-type lawn mower. I'm no mechanic (or I wouldn't be seeking help), but the mower gasoline is gravity fed, and the engine does not even have a couple of the parts you mentioned.

This is a wild idea, but could the engine be choking to the point that it cuts out? That would leave enough gasoline in the cylinder to start it again on the first pull. But, would it not smoke in this case? I guess I could pull the plug after one of the stops and see if it had gas on it. (I noticed the plug looked black and sooty on previous inspections.) Your reappraisal would be appreciated. agn7

Just reading this im thinking either the carb has dirt or water in the bowl thats being sucked up and after it sits it drops back to the base and then restarts. if you can put an inductive timing light on it and watch it when it dies and make sure the sparks not going away-let me know

You can find out if the engine has regular pressure placing a gauge tool in the fuel hoses.
Put the gauge in the inlet to fuel pump and outlet from fuel pump. The problem is likely a faulty fuel pump that stops for a very short time and restart immediately, causing the mower to stop and restart immediately. Here is the tool needed : Fuel Pump Pressure .

If the fuel pump is OK, then check distributor and carburetor settings, a bad rotor cap or coil problem, or carburetor settings with not enough air in the mix can cause similar problems.

Regards.

So the mower will not idle at all? Or does it die when you actually try to engage the blade? I can't recall if this model has an option to run without the blade going.... some do not.

Anyway, let me know and I will help you out here.

Thanks
Tim

Hrm, it's very difficult to say what it may be, could be a fuel supply issue, could be something else binding up....

Let me research this a bit more, will get back to you, let me know if you find anything as well.

How do i take off the pull start from a craftsman model 917.377582 lawnmower

engine numbers would be helpful buttttt.... the perimeter of the recoil assy should be 3-5 small screws. remove them and it should come off, the is as long as you have a eagerbeaver engine ( tecumseh ohv )

A few possibilities to check:

1. The chock is stuck on. Pull the air cleaner while running and see if the chock is closing off part of the throttle.

2. Check the OHV valve settings, could be the tolerance is too tight.

Mower starts and runs for 10 - 15 seconds, then dies. Will almost start again, but soon will not even kick over. After a while, it will start for a few seconds. This is a 15 horse Tecumseh that looks...

It sounds like a carburetor issue. The jets are probably gummed up from the old gas that was in it. Remove the carburetor and clean it out with a can of carb cleaner. Then reinstall.

I have just purchase a Sears 22 Lawm mower, with a Briggs and Stratton 158cc engine. I prime the motor it act like it wants to start but then dies. I pull it and try to strat it several more times and it...

The procedure for starting an engine is as follows:
  • Check that you have the throttle in the start position and/or on high revs with choke on
  • Prime the engine by pushing the button about 5 times
  • Pull out the cord until you meet resistance. Then let the cord go fully back into the engine and then pull the cord out sharply. Repeat this until the engine starts but not more than a few times.
  • If the engine doesn't start, try pressing the primer button another few times then try to pull start the engine
  • If the engine doesn't start after a few pulls it may have flooded so leave it for a few minutes before pulling the starter rope

After about 15 to 30 minutes, engine starts pinging (for a few seconds) then dies

Not familiar with tecumseh lawn boy. Lawn boys I worked on were 2 stroke, if this is the case the crank seal is sucking air after engine warms up. New seal would fix. If you can't do it you're self may not be economically worth it.

Sears Craftsman mower-Tecumseh engine 3.75 HP- wouldn't start-replaced air filter & spark plug; dismantled carburetor and cleaned it; now it will start but only runs for a couple of seconds and dies....

check the linkage for the governor, maybe on the wrong side, when off it should be pushing the throttle wide open, the governor brings it down after start up!

Engine starts dies down immediately.fuel is ok spark plug ok

Most likely the carburetor is not ok. An engine does not just DIE. If you press the prime bulb, does fuel squirt in carb. If it starts the runs for about 3-5 seconds then dies, there is most likely a float or needle shut off problem. Or it could be as simple as a clogged carburetor. It only takes one tiny peice to clog one. Take the carb off and make sure all jets( small holes in carb) are clean. Mike. Rate 100% please.

Mower ran fine but was outside for ayear covered now it will not

Leaving a mower outside for an extended period will often allow water to get inside the engine (even covered). Try removing the plug and drying out the cylinder (compressed air blown into the cylinder usually works.) With the plug still removed pull the cord a few times andf try to get the piston to stop on the bottom so you can blow out the entire empty cylinder. I usually then put a squirt of WD-40 in the cylinder (not too much) and pull the cord a few times....then reinstall the plug and fire it up.

If that doesn't do it, try the WD-40 in the muffler (a couple short squirts)...also make sure the air filter is clean and dry...I would try to start it without the filter installed to see if that is the problem (just don't allow it run more than a few seconds without the filter).
