Question about Maytag Washing Machines

1 Answer

My XL commercial front loader, Model MAH14PDAAW sloshes when empty, if you spin the basket by hand. Also, It's beginning to show signs of not fully spinning heavy things. They come out drippy. Is this a pump problem, most likely? Can I maybe fix it myself, I'm a bit of a mechanic but not a washing machine expert. Steve 518-755-7848

Hi, and thanks, but before I tear into it, help me with my ignorance. Why doesn't the pump empty the lower tub anyway? Is it driven by the same motor, which is slowed down by the slippage, or is the pump driven separately?

The water probably is there and the clothes are drippy because it's not gettin to full spin speed. This is probably caused by a slipping motor belt. Here's a diagram showing your belt part 29, the motor part 31, and the pulley part 28 which drives your inner tub. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?diagramPageId=00009&documentId=P0310146&modelNumber=MAH14PDAAW&productCategoryId=0153100&brandId=3048&modelName=&backToLink=Return+to+part+list

Maytag Neptune sounds like it still has water in it when it is empty

There is water in the drain hose that will slosh if you move the tub assembly by hand. The drain pumps are apparently designed like that; to not drain all the water i mean. Could that be what you are hearing? Also debris in your filter basket may not be allowing machine to drain as much as it should. Not sure about your model but this video should show similar pump cleaning procedure. Hope it helps.

Tip

Replacing a Rear Tub Bearing

Rear Tub Bearing Replacement
(Part 1 of 3)

This advice is for replacing the rear wash tub shell of most Kenmore Elite HE model FRONT LOADERS, along with Whirlpool Duet, and some Frigidaire FRONT LOADER models. This is a repair that would be rated as difficult due to the extensive disassembly and reassembly of components.

The requirement to replace the rear wash tub shell is usually attributed to the rear tub bearing failure in which the bearings are molded into the tub and cannot be replaced otherwise. In some situations the replacement of the inner spinner basket (stainless steel tub) may also be required due to the corrosion and breakage of the spider arms in the back of the basket that support the basket.

SYMPTOMS: Washer exhibits excessively loud “rumbling” type noise during the spin cycle, excessively vibrates, or won’t spin at all.

DETERMINING IF THE BEARING AND SPIN BASKET ARE BAD: With the washer door open, place your hand inside the basket and push straight up. If there is excessive play in the tub (wobbles up and down) the bearing is probably bad. If the spinner basket scrapes against the outer tub shell when you give it a spin, you will have to replace the inner spin basket as well. Unfortunately, you cannot see the condition of spinner basket supports until it is removed from the outer tub shells. In some cases, a brownish colored stain my show up on clothing as the bearing seal has been breached and leaks into the spinner basket.

Before starting this repair, make sure you read through all instructions thoroughly and place the washer is in an area that gives you plenty of space to work.

"2007 Whirlpool Cabrio HE top loader with glass lid" sat for 3 months, now it does everything except agitate, and flashes

The OL error code indicates that the washer is overloaded. If the washer is not overloaded, this would indicate either a drag on the drive system or the control board is failing. Be sure nothing is on the floor under the washer that could be causing a problem. Raise the lid & manually spin the basket, it should spin freely. If not, you may have an item stuck between the spin basket and the washer tub. The image below shows how to remove the spin basket. If you unplug the washer and follow that procedure, you may find the cause of your problem.

Here is the document to help you.

When I hand turn the drum I still hear water behind the drum please help

You most likely are not hearing water remaining in the tub. You are hearing the water slosh around in the balance ring that is attached to the spin basket. There is a balance ring attached to the spin basket that is half filled with water. When the basket is turned by hand you will hear the water in the balance ring. This is normal.

My washing machine leaks & doesn't drain

Is this a FRONT LOADER? Or, a TOP LOADER?

If you have a leaking FRONT LOADER, the following link explains how to access and inspect your washer for leaks:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3576656-washer_leak__front_loader

In the majority of the cases with front loaders, the door bellow begins to leak. A routine inspection of the seal perimeter will tell you if there are any rips or tears. If the bellow is damaged, it must be replaced. The following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574186-installing_a_door_bellow_on_a_front_load

If this is a TOP LOADER, the following link explains how to access and inspect your washer for leaks:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3576648-washer_leak__top_loader

In the majority of cases with a top loader, the water pump begins to leak. These pumps are not serviceable and require replacing if damaged. The following link explains how:

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need.

Follow the tips in the link(s) provided and make sure you inspect all hoses and tub seals as well.

If you have any questions, please post back with your MODEL NUMBER, so I can determine what washer configuration you have. I hope you find this information helpful.

NOTE: The drain issue you referring to may not be a problem at all. It is normal for some residual water to remain in the wash tub below the spin basket. This is the low point of the drain line and some water ALWAYS resides here. If the water is visible in the spin basket, then you have a legitimate concern. In addition: If this is a TOP LOADER, some models use a balance ring on the top of the wash tub that is filled with fluid. This helps to stabalize the wash tub during the spin cycles and minimize off-balance issues.

During the spin cycle the machine made a loud thud and now during spin cycles the machine pounds and slams yet when the machine is off the basket spins freely and without obstruction... any suggestions?...

It is doutful the basket or drum has warped. With such a loud thud and still doing it when you use the machine, it appears one of the balance springs or its mounting has broken loose. This will require opening the shell of the machine. Some models have a 3 point suspension, others have a 4 point suspension. This broken suspension point will account for the fact that you can spin the drum feely by hand yet it goes crazy when spinning with a load.
Because it is a front load unit, you must be careful or have a certain level of knowledge to open the unit and reclose it with the drum, seal, and facing all lining-up and not binding. As always, unplug the unit before taking it apart. Good Luck. Macgivor

Washer spins but doesn't spin the clothes dry anymore

If it's a Whirlpool toploader, or a Kenmore with a model number starting with 110.XXXXXXX, then you have oil on your clutch. You'll need a gearcase, clutch, and motor coupler. Test this when empty by putting the machine into spin, activate the lid switch, and place your wet hand on the inside of the spinning basket. If your wet hand can stop the basket easily, it's the clutch.
Another telltale sign: oil sprayed around the inside of the cabinet at the height of the clutch.
