While the System is booting up , press F10 button .It takes you to BIOS Settings Page . There by pressing the right Arrow Key Go to System Configuration Settings . Browse down to SATA Drive . by Default it is found to be Enabled . Click on Enter , you find two options "Enabled /Disabled" . Select Disabled .
Press F10 ( which means Save and Exit ) ..
And enjoy .. Hope this resolves as it did for me .

Go in to System Setup (F9 I think) and find the SATA Native setting and set it to 'disabled'.

I fixed this problem by disabling the native sata support in the BIOS and googling and downloading the hardware drivers.

Use nlite to make a custom copy of win xp and load the sata drivers from hp website into the setup file worked for me

Go into the BIOS setup (press f10 during boot process), System configuration and disable SATA Native Support. Try installing XP again and it should see your hard drive.

It shouldve already had the os installed.
try cold starting the pc and pressing f11 to see if will reinstall from the recovery partition(if it has one)
if not call the manufacture and act stupid. tell them you came home hit the power button and this is whats happening

The problem is that the drive is a SATA drive. Windows XP has a limited selection of SATA drivers. You have to go to the HP website, download the driver and create a floppy disk with the installation. THEN you have to find someone wiht an external floppy so that the drivers might be loaded during installation (you have to click on F6 at the beggining of windows XP installation).
OR you could slipstream your drivers into a Windows XP disc of your creation. Google "Slipstream SATA drivers on Windows XP" for instructions.

If the BIOS cannot detect the hard drive, then it could faulty.
If this laptop is new, then it is still under warranty, take it back to the supplier for a warranty repair or a replacement.
If you try to repair it, you may void your warranty.

The hard disk may be set to Enhanced AHCI SATA mode. Look for Legacy or IDE mode setting in BIOS menu options.
XP SP2 does not recognise Enhanced SATA mode hard disks.
You may be able to use NLite to make a CD which has correct SATA drivers.

Well to be honest that laptop i see has been out for a while so not sure ho wnew it is...
But if you are doing a Install of the OS and it is not going, then it could be a problem with the actual hard drive so i can say, call Hp and see if it still under warranty if it is new and have them have a go at it, if it is not under warranty then it could be the hard drive, OS install will go through if all is well, Hardware boots up first in initial computer startup.
So if it is stating that it cannot find one, then unfortunately there is only that much you can do..
In bios the only thing you may see is boot sequence, and if you see that and enter into it then you should see something like..
HDD hard drive CD/DVD drive Network Adapter
then whatever else is there to boot...
So call HP and try to see about that...
