I have a c4280 all in one printer/scanner. The print feature works okay but when the scanner button is pressed, pop up indicates that the USB cable is not connected? How can I correct the scanner problem?

  • ltrib Sep 06, 2009

Thanks for your comments. I'm confused and still not sure how to correct the problem. The scanner was working at one time; yet, you indicate the driver on my CD is incorrect. Now it doesn't scan. A HP Photosmart C4200 series disk version 8.0 was used for the original installation. Is there any reason why I should not use the original disk. Not sure why I should use the link to load 9.3 version. Please clear the fog. Have a great day!

Your reply: www.hp.com and on the left side you will see a grey menu that says software and driver downloads. Click on it and type your product. The version right now is 9.7.1. There is no grey menu item " software and driver downloads. Also; are you suggesting that I reload my windows XP?

Apparently, the C4280 driver on your CD is incorrect. So, reinstall your C4280 driver from here:

www.hp.com and on the left side you will see a grey menu that says software and driver downloads. Click on it and type your product. The version right now is 9.7.1

DO NOT INSTALL THE HP INSTALLER FILE - it is the same as on your CD.

Hope this helps.

    Hi.

Some device drivers have problems and the device driver that came with your printer/scanner apparently didn't work consistently. That is one reason why software (in this case a driver) is updated by the manufacturer. So, you should use the updated driver - download from the Internet and save for future use.

    Good luck.

No need to reinstall Windows XP, but just the software for your printer (called a driver).

If you haven't already, delete the C4280 in Printers and Faxes

I found this link for Windows XP:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...

Select "Download only". Download the file to your desktop, save and run.

Disconnect the printer's cable, restart your PC, connect the cable and your PC should see your C4280.

    Let me know.

Photosmart c4280 up address

The IP address for the Photosmart C4280 printer can be found by following these steps:
  1. Press the Setup button on the printer.
  2. Select Network from the menu.
  3. Select Wireless Summary or IP Address, depending on your printer model.
  4. The IP address should be listed on this screen.
If you are trying to print from an iPhone or iPad using a USB cable, you will need to use the Apple AirPrint feature, as the device does not support USB printing. To use AirPrint, ensure that both the printer and the iOS device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and then select the printer when prompted during the print process.

My printer will print and copy but won't scan. It

First, do you have the full-featured version of the software installed (installed on the computer before connecting the printer to the computer)? Second, do you have the all-in-one connected to a print server or USB hub? These can block the two-way communication needed for scanning. Try a direct connection. Also try a new USB cable and a different USB port (if you have any signal loss issues, it matters more with the scanner).

I hope this helps.

HP C4280 printer will print but will not scan - keeps sending message no USB port

Go to Hp's website and d/l or update the drivers. Make sure to put in your model. Hope this helps. Another thing you can do is go into device manager and see if there are any yellow question marks? This would indicate the device is not functioning properly.

My printer works fine using the "print" button on screen and the "copy" button on the computer. When I select the "scan" button on the printer it tells me the USB cable is not connected.

Check the owner's manual if the scanner requires USB 2.0 to operate correctly. If it does your USB cable needs to be 2.0 specification instead of the original 1.1 specification. That would go for the computer as well.

If the above comments don't apply uninstall the software for both the printer and scanner; restart the computer; re-install all the software; restart the computer... and it should work unless the scanner part of the printer has a problem.

Printer and copier work fine- scanner says USB not connected.

I had this same problem and it is fixable, but not the way you would probably like, though you can still scan with the printer. You just have to open the Paint program and click from scanner or camera, and then choose your printer and click scan preview, and then scan, it works just fine but its a little time consuming.

HP c4280 All in one printer, scanner, copier.

I visited the HP Support site and downloaded the Uninstaller and then the Installer. It took about 90 minutes but has cured the problem completely. I also made sure all drivers were up to date from the HP site check.
