Question about Mitsubishi VS-50805 50" Rear Projection Television
My old reliable VS-50801 has suddenly begun to go black during viewing. If turned off for a bit, it's okay again, but is happening more frequently. What could be the problem? Is it worth fixing? NONE
VS 50801 and VS 60801 mitsubishi models (I have one each) have both had this problem develop after about 10 years of service. The picture simply started "Blinking" off after collapsing to a horizontal line - audio was still present. A simple fix to this problem is to space the yoke connector (7-pin white "Molex-type") away from the neck of the CRT (~1/8 ") . I used a plastic insulator. My 60" set had a problem with the center CRT (green) connector and thye 50" set had the same problem on the connector on the Left (red) yoke connector. The TV senses an open yoke circuit and shuts down all deflection drive. I only want a few more years of service from these sets, otherwise I would resolder the connector on the PCB for a correct and permanent solution.

I had that problem last year. Found the remains of some insect inside, with goo over several connectors. I used some isopropyl alcohol and q-tips to clean most of it, then an eraser for the corrosion. It was on the front left hand side, at the connections between the green and brown (audio and video) boards. Just be careful of the connecting cables. The audio cable especially has to be disconnected to get the chassis out far enough to get to the front of the chassis out enough to see and clean the boards.
