I had the same message with my Samsung S8300 but I replaced the flex ribbon and it solved the problem (you have to take apart the phone to replace this ribbon and it must be a fairly common issue because you can find the ribbons for sale on E-Bay).
press and hold the large button on thed right side of the phone until the screen shows what the camera is looking at. to come out of the camera just press the middle button on the front of the phone.
slide open phone hit menu then camera then at top left of screen hit camera icon then you get mode select and you can select camera, scene and camcorder hit camcorder and ur off.to get back on camera just do hit camcorder icon in top left corner to get back into camera mode. Just have a mess around with options.
