Question about Samsung HL-P5063W 50" Rear Projection HDTV

Problem turning On

We have a Samsung HL-P5063W DLP TV. Lately it will not turn on the first time the remote is pressed, in fact it seems to take longer and longer to come on. Sometimes the timer and the lamp lights blink on and off for a while and then all three lights blink and the standby light comes back on. After pressing the On button on the remote and going through this process a number of times, it will finally come on. The picture looks good. the set is three years old.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Hi Robertod,

I really never got an answer from anyone here concerning the problem, so I continued to do some reading on my own. I then decided to replace the lamp. The lamp contains electrodes with a gap. Continuity tests will always show an open. A spark actually jumps this gap to initially fire the buld. Once fired the bulb is then powered by a much lower voltage. Firing is about 5000 volts and continuous operation is about 65 volts, I think. At any rate the gap in the bulb becomes wider as the electrodes wear down from sparking similar to the way a spark plug does. This increased gap becomes increasingly difficult for the spark to jump and thus the problems that we both experienced.

A new lamp can be obtained from Discount-Merchant dot com. The TV that we have was originally fitted with at least two different types of lamp. There is a smaller square bulb that has two semicircular openings on opposite sides of the bulb. The other is al arger round bulb (this is the older design). You will need to know the type of bulb before you call about a new one. Discount-Merchant has an adapter kit that allows you to use the newer, smaller, square, and longer lasting bulb as a replacement for the older round bulb, if your set needs it.

To get to the bulb assembly UNPLUG the set and remove the rectangular panel on the BACK of the set. It is on the lower left side (as you face the TV from the front). You will need a medium to small Phillips screw driver for this. Once the panel cover is out of the way (4 screws) then remove the singular locking screw on the left side of the assembly. Now grasp the assembly with the fingers of your left hand (there are two places for them on the left of the assembly) pull the assembly straight out. You can now examine the bulb and determine the type of bulb that is required. My set had a square bulb installed from the factory. I replaced it with a BP96-00826A Phillips lamp. Replacement instructions can be found on the Discount-Merchant web site complete with pictures.

The bulb replacement solved all of the problems that I mentioned in my post. The replacement is easy and requires only a Phillips screw driver and a pair of needle nose pliers. Two cautions. Don't touch the new bulb with your fingers. Use a cloth or cotton gloves to handle the bulb. Be careful when you tighten the electrode wires to the bulb and don't over tighten. This is really easy and can be done in about 30-45 minutes including a coffee break.

Please let me know if this was a help to you and if it solves your problem. If there are any questions about replacement, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I had the same problem and replaced the bulb. However, after replacement the indicator on the front blinks lamp standby temp with NO picture. What else could be wrong? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have Samsung DLP TV 50 inch HL-P5063W

First thing to look at is the color wheel this model uses--usually it will make a high pitched fan like sound but can make a grinding sound also.

If it slows down from the 12,000 or so RPM speed it will cause color issues.

Samsung HL-P5063W makes a whining sound and then goes off

The most common failure in the DLP that makes a whining sound would be the color wheel. They cost about $135 + labor because I wouldn't advise changing it by yourself.

Problem turning On

The lamp, ballast or dmd board can cause the same problem. Most commonly on these DLPs it is the lamp, but we have to use the process of elimination as well sometimes. Even as a samsung warranty center sometimes the flow charts don't help. The first thing I would do as a consumer is to vacuum around the ventilation holes behind set, these can cuase poor circulation and startup/shutduwn problems. Then with those type of lights flashing start by bidding for or buying the most inexpensive lamp you can get. Make sure exact replacement. Do not touch the glass on lamp when replacing. Then try the ballast which also has a part number on it and has only two screws when you have lamp removed from set. If still no luck, assume it is the dmd board and try pricing that baby. Not cheap! Then comes the decision. New set or repair this. This is what you can expect unfortunately. But I have the same set at home. Go figure.
