Our fahrenheat wall heater (no thermostat, just an off/on switch with a few heat levels) turns itself on and off even when the switch is rotated to "on."
we'd like to use the heater but don't want to be paying for electric when we don't need it! what should we do?

fan motor control switches are set for 130 degrees to start and stop the fan, yours is fused shut so the fan will not turn off, there will be 2 such units in your heater the other is the high limit gas cut off switch locate your fan switch usually has an egg shape with a screw or nut holding on each tab,,so 2 screws or nuts, mark the locations the wires connect to the switch, some have a 3 wire unit, bring the faulty switch to a local plumbing and heating outlet and simply match yours to any available unit in the temp range yours is set to or 130 degree limit, and also has the same wire count, should be around 15 bucks or so good luck
UNIT SOUNDS LIKE ITS SHUTTING DOWN ON A LIMIT SWITCH IN HEATER. THEY LOOK LIKE ROUND BUTTONS OF DIFFERENT SIZES. THE HAVE 2 WIRES GOING TO THEM AND THEY ARE A NORMALLY CLOSED. THERE IS A FAN DISK NORMALLY OPEN TO UNTILL IT GETS HOT AND CLOSES TO TURN ON FAN. IF THE FAN SWITCH TAKES TO LONG TO CLOSE THEN LIMIT OPENS TO PROTECT FROM OVER-HEATING
Hello. The red and the black are the hot wires. Therefore, connect one of your conductors to the red and the other conductor to the black. Use wirenuts. The bare ground wire should be solidly attached to the new unit's green wire using a wire nut.

It sounds like you are not getting the correct voltage for the heating element. If you wired a single pole thermostat, and its a 220v unit, then it will not get hot enough, like you are saying. If its a 220 heater, you need a 2p2t thermostat. The parts supplier will know what this means.
You need a meter, it will be hard without this! If you have 220v in the wall, then think of it like this; each wire is 120v. Test to each other, you get 220v. The thermostat is a double pole, you said. So think of it like this, its an adjustable temperature controlled switch that lets electricity through at the temp. you set it at. If you have 120v from one wire connected to one end of the element, and the other 120v connected to the other end of the element, then it will work. DO NOT CONNECT THE 120V TOGETHER. IT MUST GO THROUGH THE ELEMENT FIRST. The thermostat should be between the power from the wall and the element, to control the temperature.
about the only way I can figure is to let the room get very cool and adjust the thermostat to its lowest setting. now turn on the unit. monitor the heat until the stat just opens. the thermostat bimetal will be closed and will open when the bimetal expands and opens its contacts. another way is to hitch up a chart recorder to measure temperature with its output connected to the heater. [too expensive for you or the DIY to accomplish]
