I have the same problem. I already tried Kalilulah's solution, but to
no avail. I tried using some of the recovery programmes such as
RecoveryFix and Recuva which also gives the same results. I really need
the data and do not want to format it.

Well, in your case you should format the external drive and then try some so-called data recovery software.

First of ALL - Connect your hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem!

I too had the problem with a Freecom Toughdrive.

I used chkdsk to fix it.

You will need to open a command window, Run -> cmd

Then type chkdsk to verify the problem, then chkdsk/f to fix it.

I can now access all of my files, although I still am unable to safely remove it as Windows reports that it is being accessed by another program.

How to recove Seagate external hard drive data?

Probably, the new operating system cannot recognize your Seagate external hard drive. You can connect the Seagate external hard drive to another computer to copy data to another device. If the problem still exists, you might need to perform data recovery. You can free download the data recovery software: http://www.icare-recovery.com/seagate-recovery/seagate-external-cannot-be-recognized.html

Transcend 500 GB External HDD is detected but doesnt show the data in it.

Your external HDD may be corrupted. Recover the data before you use it.

First things first: STOP using the external hard dive that you want to recover data from in case you may quite possibly ruin your chances of data recovery.

Then Recommend you have a try of Wondershare Data Recovery, a data recovery program with both Windows and Mac versions provided. It should help you. Get the related versions here,

Data Recovery Windows (for Windows)
Data Recovery Mac (for Apple Mac OS)

Remember - Do NOT try & write anything back to your hard drive until you can recover your data safely!

I have a problem with my seagate agent go 500 gb. when plugged in to my laptop it doesn't detect it and it freezes my laptop until i unplug it. how can i get to my files in the external hard drive?

try to connect it to other computer, if it doesn't help, hdd is probably broken. If you disassemble, you will find internal hard drive, which you can try to connect to desktop PC to save your data, or look up for some data recovery company

download and install R-studio ntfs this run r-studio ntfs then locate drive in screen then scan drive It will take awhile to scan once scanned you may open the scanned drive let it search for all files to be recovered then just place a tick by the files or folders to be recovered then click recover then select destination folder then click the appropiat button and wait for allfiles or folders to be recovered.
