Dell Dimension 5150 DVD Players Will not play

Suddenly I cannot play a DVD on my Dell, on either DVD drive. It has been playing DVDs fine for two years and now Media Center tells me that it cannot play the DVD and Sonic "sees" the DVD, but will not play it.

I have no problem playing games though. I have not installed anything new and have XP SP2. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, both drives, same time. My wife remembers this happening about a year ago and she sort of remembers that we had to re-register or something like that. In other words, it was not a hardware issue, but an issue about having to re-register.

I had the same problem from my Dell Dimension 5150, the drive that came with it worked for just over a year, then out of the blue it decided to stop working. i looked around on the net for any solutions and found that the drive was a cheap hybrid from Hitachi and LG. The problem is you drive not your computer, i replaced my drive with a Pioneer one, it works great.

Maybe the carbons of the DVD reader are getting too old and it doesn't rotate as fast as how it was burned so it cannot read the movies..
buying a new one will fix your problem..
the problems of nano technology is that things are too small to be fixed by humans...

maybe you could play those games because they were old, and since most of the stuff its installed in your computer it doesn't need much from the DVD unit..

What fix to apply to HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B in Dell Dimension E310 so it can read/play a dvd movie?

Try the following:

1. Go to the support site and be sure you have the latest updates for your computer's operating system and the DVD drive, especially the DVD drive's drivers BIOS.

2. Make sure you have the software to play the movie, like Sonic, Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Quicktime, etc. and be sure they are the latest versions.

3. Depending on the movie format, not all DVD drives will play all DVDs. The most common discs are DVD-R and DVD+R and file types like *.avi, *.mpeg, *.mp4, *.mov and then commercial formats. Also try the movie in another machine or DVD player and see what happens.

My Dell 5150 has stopped playing dvds. It will play a youtube off the net or a video off of an email, etc. But if I put a dvd in the d: drive, it will not play. Can you help?

You might just need to correct or set the autoplay settings for DVD's but you need to provide more information especially what operating system before anyone can provide a proper solution. Also need to know if your drive plays any media at all.

Dvds are not recognized

hi h0tr0dh00dlu
if dvd's are not recognized
try to see if you dvd drive is shown in your os. double click My Computer to see.
Also checked if your disk drive is capable of playing dvd format.
I checked that Dell Dimension 4500 PC only comes with a bundle of cd-rw so dvd's can't be played
If not the best option is to buy a dvd drive @

Hope it helps, Feedbacks appreciated

I have a dell dimension 2400 series, now i find i cannot play dvds on it i get a note up 2 to say "windows media player cannot play dvd compatible dvd decoder not fitted " what can i do to...

are you trying to play DVDs from a different region ?
PC DVD Drives, are region set to the computer, if you have a region 1 dvd drive, trying to play region 2 dvds et,c. it won,t let you. theres a couple of ways around this. go to Afterdawn ( on the web ) and download a region free dvd device.
Solution 2. try to obtain any updates or re-install windows media player. suggest player version 9 or above.

Mike @ compurepair.

p.s finally is to check that your drive, indeed supports DVD Or certain types of dvd media. i.e DVD+ Or DVD- some only support One type.
