It does'nt really matter IDE or SATA both are using same connector. you can change it from second hand or from another board sometimes its not available.

I broke the mini usb port on my external hd can it be repaired..

Hi Kathleen,
Depending on the extent of the damage it may be possible for your local PC store technician to repair the USB connector.
Take the drive to your local PC store and enquire about a repair and what the cost would be.
At the same time you can ask them what it will cost for a new external USB hard drive case. They can easily remove your hard drive from the damaged case and install it into a new case. This will most likely be cheaper than having the old one repaired, as a new case should only set you back $10 or $20.
Best wishes,

I have a seagate externial hard drive it worked fine went to use next day and it wont power up....any way of gettign my stuff off of it

First thing to do is try a USB port on the back of your computer. Also try another computer to see if it is just a bad port.

My Seagate portable 320gb external hard drive fell on the floor now my computer and laptop don't see it( won't let me get in to the hard drive) , how do I fix this , Important files on it Help please

Since this external hard drive is USB powered and felt on the floor, you could have a broken USB connector or interface card, both located inside hard disk case, you should contact Seagate technical support or repair service, or if you have electronics skills, you could open and check hardware by yourself.

My borrowed transcend storejet 320GB would not open to my DELL INSPIRON 1440. the light indicator is not steady.

the usb ports on your laptop may have insufficient power to operate the drive, you could try a double usb cable, it has a mini usb at one end and two normal usb at the other, so it shares the power from two ports.

USB port broke off. Can I connect to something else to get the data off the drive? I cracked open the case and it's a barracuda 7200 but I don't recognize the pin connections. Please help? Thank...

Yes just fixed mine. Went to radio shack bought a gigaware sata 3.5 external enclosure.
Took the harddrive out of old enclosure. pryed off external alluminum case to expose a panel that sticks out to the side where the broken usb plug went. Wiggled that off then placed in new enclosure fits good. secured with old screws. plugged it in and it works great. The new usb plug is much sturdier. The external case cost me about $40.00 and some change but Im glad i retreaved my data. I will never buy another seagate. Hope this helps...Alan

Mini-USB port has broken off from my 500 gb Seagate drive

Yeah you can probably just get the enclosure dissassembled. googling " how to disassemble seagate freeagent pro" pulled up a few links but if you're not comfortable doing that, try asking for help from local college computer lab geeks. I'm on the other side of the country from you so, can't help you much. The usb port that fell off was probably connected to the drive via an adapter so likely the hard drive itself is not damaged. Data recovery is much more expensive and I agree it isn't reasonable for this kind of problem.

How do i find a usb adapter for my maxtor one touch 4 mini 120gb it broke?

You can buy a USB to USB mini cable at almost any store with PC accessories, even Walmart. Buy a high quality one since the drive is powered from the USB 2.0 port. Good Luck
