No Picture on the LCD screen or view finder

I Have The Same Problem as AJB7 - There is no picure in my view finder or LCD screen. I have all of my display menu's and such, but no picture, and yes the lense cover is down. There is a small eye looking icon in the screen, and I can view old videos, but when I try and record the screen is pitch black even though audio is recording.
I have a Sony Digi-8 Handycam DCR-TRV 140 and I just have a grey screen in my viewfinder. It does record but there is no image. Someone mentioned a recall. Is the Sony distributor doing a recall on certain Sony camcorders? Someone said to tap it with a screwdriver. I've done that but it didn't help. Please advise!
