Re: Windows 98 changing from dialup to high speed

You can do this, but I would not recommend it. Windows 98 is very susceptible to malware. You can get things just by going to the wrong website. These are called drive by downloads. It will get very slow from all of the malware running on the system very fast.

Look into downloading a Linux distribution like Ubuntu, or PCLinuxOS. You will be able to find a linux distro that will fit on your old computer and be very secure. Look at Distrowatch for many more options.

It is not possible to use Windows 98 on the Internet and remain secure. If you post the model/serial number of the compaq computer, or its stats then we could tell you if you can upgrade it to XP or Windows 2000, but this may not be practical on older equipment.

It is sad the device manufacturers and even Microsoft don't offer any support for Windows98 users. Windows 98 is much stable and relatively safer against virus attacks than the newer Windows versions.
I guess you can download the driver from
If it cannot be downloaded now, try exactly in 5 hours.

Dear Friend
I will rather suggest you for the LAN instead of data transfer cable. By using LAN you can share Data, Documents, pictures, printers, faxes, and storage devices at High Speed.

My wife has a dell vista os computer. can not defragment hard drive. have tried several programs to no avail.what do i do ?

With Windows Vista and Windows 7, hard drive fragmentation is a minor issue, and rarely contributes to a computer's slowness. If you're still running Windows Vista, I would highly recommend an upgrade to Windows 7, as it will likely help speed things up.

Which is more secure dsl (landline)or ethernet? have dialup and wondering if should change? is ATT dsl lite the way to go?

If you are looking for better speed when browsing the web, DSL is the way to go. Even ATT's DSL lite is around 20 times faster than dialup plus it doesn't tie up your phone line.

How do you optimize windows 98 for a dsl connection?

you either buy a new computer or install windows 2000 to the computer.

windows 98 is very limited in that sense. and its quite insecure to use that online.

I would say its not safe to use windows 98 on the internet, I would definitely NOT pay my bills on a windows 98 machine.

Since microsoft does not support 98 anymore, they don't fix any of the security problems that come up, so your computer is open to the internet for any hacker to drop by and take it over or steal your details.

I would highly recommend it that you either install windows 2000 to the computer or buy a new computer, or buy a used computer with windows xp, I bet you can get one of those for less than 100

Windows 98 se problems

Please to don't take this wrong but your computer is an antique.
There is a big chance that it is not going to turn on one day and you may lose all of the data on it.

Don't feel bad though, that is suprisingly long life for a computer!

It is time to get a new PC and move your data to it. This is your last chance to get Windows XP which is the last version of Windows that still looks like WIndows 98. Don't get stuck with Windows Vista.

Check out and type "Outlet" into the Search Window. The slowest Windows XP computer you find will be WAY faster than your current computer at a tenth of the price. They even have payment plans.

I hope this helps.
