I was driving my 2000 mitsubishi eclipse and the shifter got stok in gear 5 when i got it loose the shifter moved but the car was not giong anywhere.

Foot on the brake before you shift
Lift up lightly on the shifter and wiggle
If nothing pull the center console and check the shifter to see what is in the way

Have the car towed to a local transmission repair shop, they can give you a preliminary diagnosis in most case at no charge

could be the shifter when its not engaged in park all the way it prevents it from starting

This just happened to my 02 eclipse gt automatic on Thanksgiving 2012 . Its ur torque converter , the torque converter engages forward and reverse drive... Sorry to say but u need a transmission rebuild.... I just swapped mine to a 5 speed for around $2000

There is a switch at the base of your shifter that prevents starting when transmission is in gear. Your switch is loose or broken. Remove console to access switch for repair. If you have questions, please let us know.

It would help if you said if it was automatic or manual transmission.
I will assume manual.
But it still matters if it is a 4 or 5 speed?
First thing to do is check the transmission fluid level, and make sure it is full.
Synchros always stick when out of oil.
Then it is probably linkage.
Have someone move it forward and back, and watch the linkage from the engine compartment or underneath, to see what is loose or jammed on something.

If is is a standard it may be the clutch is gone.

check your tran fld if its up something broke in your tranny it will have to be pulled and repaired or raplaced

you have worn out teeth on your transmission or you need a new clutch disc.
