Question about Canon Digital Rebel / EOS-300D Digital Camera with EF-S 18-55mm and EF 75-300mm Lenses

Shooting with External Flash

Hi I am an amateur photographer and have a Canon Speedlite 420EX that I am using with my Canon Rebel. I usually shoot everything is automode, but when I put the flash on, the pix are extremely blurry. I can't find my manual for the flash, nor can I find it online. Do you have any idea what these settings are for on the flash? Thanks in advance

Without more information, it sounds like the flash may be set to a manual mode. Try setting the flash to an auto mode. The display should indicate something to the effect of "E-TTL" or maybe just "TTL". The reason your images are blurry, would be due to a slow shutter speed being used on the camera. If your flash is not set to trigger automatically, then the camera will use the slowest shutter speed to acheive the proper exposure of the image. My assumption would be that if you were to take two images back-to-back with the speedlight set to your current setting, one with the speedlight the other with the pop-up flash, the latter would not be blurry. Hope this helps.

Pilot light not lighting on 420ex speedlite canon flash

This may seem dumb to ask but have you made sure all batteries are fresh (even new ones can be bad), they\'re inserted correctly observing polarity and the contacts are clean in the flash? (You can clean them using a clean, dry pencil eraser and a Q-Tip dipped lightly in alcohol.)

Also, try mounting the flash on your camera, turn both on and reset your camera to factory default settings through your camera menu settings.
