System unit error in pentium 3 compaq presario

That's an old mainboard (Motherboard), used in a Compaq Presario 5716 desktop computer. (And perhaps a few other Compaq Presario's)

1) Uses a Slot 1 (Intel) processor slot.

2) Maximum Intel Slot 1 processor that can be used, is an Intel Pentium III, with a 100MegaHertz Front Side Bus. (100MHz FSB)
Maximum frequency rate for the processor is 700MHz.

3) Ram memory is SDR Sdram at 100MHz. Or also known as PC-100. (168 pin. 82 on each side. Two Locating Notches on bottom. Commonly just known as Sdram, but that is a misnomer)

Maximum TOTAL Amount of ram memory is 384MegaByte.
Maximum Amount for each ram memory slot is 128MB.
There are 3 ram memory slots.

4) Do not know what the jumper settings on the motherboard are.

5) Do not know what the Front Panel header pinout is.

6) Can run Windows XP Home Edition, but do not expect a world of performance.

it is depend on the operating system of the laptop. if you use operating system of the windows of the trial version or the pirated windows xp then it is comes.You purchase the original version of the windows xp or use other windows as vista ,premium..etc.

code 304 = Keyboard or system unit error. Not repairable. You will have to replace the system board.

u need to fix error on harddisk.
u can fix those error with "chkdsk /r"

You may need a new CMOS battery.
For now, you will most certainly need to reconfigure your BIOS as it is probably not recognizing your hard drive.
Your PC should tell you which key to use to enter your BIOS setup, such as ESC, DEL, F2 etc.  Press the appropriate key while booting to access the BIOS configuration.  From there, see if there is an option to set the hard drive to AUTO.
Also, it's possible that the BIOS is recognizing the hard drive, but your Master Boot Record (MBR) has been corrupted.  To fix this, insert your OS (windows) disk and load into a DOS command prompt via selecting the REPAIR option.  Once at your command prompt, type in FIXMBR, and press <ENTER>. It will warn that rewriting the MBR may cause problems...just continue.  Once successful, reboot your PC.
If that doesn't work, then you will probably need more help reconfiguring the BIOS, and may need to replace the small battery on your motherboard.

3. Under Desktop icons, click to select the check boxes of the icons you want to view.
4. Click OK two times.

check whether the cooling fans are working or not , if working , then do a fresh installation of OS

search for the manual on the net.use its model number placed near the cpu socket.
