hi there,

got a new sony laptop. has 1 GB ram (512 MB * 2) . What tools will I need to install 2 GB RAM( 2 dimms) (DDR2 PC-4200 Memory) ? I was thinking of buying the stuff from the net and then install myself.

Is it recommended to install myself OR pay more and buy the RAM from bestbuys since they will install the RAM themselves ?

what are the risks of installing myself ?

Thank you,

BR,

Hi,

Most current laptops have a lid/panel underneath the bottom covers hiding the memory. You need to turnover the laptop and visual inspect the bottom panel/cover. Memories often are readily accessible to the user. They are underneath a lid/panel which is roughly squarish about 2 X 2 inches. It is normally held in place by small screw(s). Upon screw removal, you need to pry open the lid cover to expose the memories. Pressing sideways on the 2 retaining clips of the memory would pop it out slightly which should then be relatively easy to remove.Popping in new memory is the reverse. Diagonally insert the new memories into the slots to initially set them in. Gently but firmly press on the memories downwards to lock them in place. You will notice that the 2 retaining clips will automatically lock in place.

Alternately, for a few more, you can purchase the memory from any computer shop/store and ask them to install hereby assuring yourself that the job was done right. Further the store will not have any excuse/reason when the new memory malfunctions and can be readily replaced.

Of course yo can do it yourself, it is relatively a simple job and if you are willing to take the risk (very minimal), go for a DIY (do-it-yourself).

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
