Solution: Replace cap. Radio Shack sells a 1000uF, 35V cap for $2. This will work.

Why did the cap go bad? The cap is too close to a heat sink and over heated.

What does this cap do? This cap sends a signal to an IC which keeps the monitor 'on' after the power switch is pushed. When the cap is weak, AC ripple voltage is applied to the IC and it sends a signal to shut the monitor off.

Opening the Monitor: These monitors are difficult to open.

The two plastic pieces snap together and must be pried apart with a flat screw driver.

After removing the stand, you need to insert a flat screw driver at the bottom of the screen where two slots are located. Then work the screw driver around until the two plastic pieces are separated.

Remove the cover plate and unscrew the push button circuit board.

Unplug the monitor cords from the driver board and remove the screen.

Unscrew the mounting screws from the power supply board and remove.

You will need to pinch the plastic support in the middle of the board to remove.

Cap Replacement:

Cap is located near a copper heat sink and the value will be on the side of the cap. It will be bulged up on the top. You will see burn marks on the board surrounding the cap. Unsolder the cap.

Install the new cap and solder. Make sure you connect + of the cap to + marked on the board.

Be careful not to solder across joints.

Keep leads long so you can bend the cap as far away from the heat sink as possible.

Reassemble monitor and turn on.

This should solve the problem.

Black screen on computer monitor

Here is the link for the E151FPb monitor manual.
Since you email your question you have access to get this manual and print it. The manual shows the Auto set button, the contrast control button and a monitor reset feature.

Unfortunately you have to do each of these blind. Follow the instruction given, push buttons smartly, wait a few seconds for any action to take place, then follow the next instruction.

Good luck.

The screen stays on for only 2 seconds and then goes black. I push the button on and it will come on again for 2 seconds for several tries. Pretty soon it won't come on at all but you can see the button...

Most likely the back light is problem.
If you see the whole screen initially, the CCFLs are ok.
Solution 1. Replace the power board, if you can get a cheap one.

Solution 2. ** Warning ** This method defeats the protection circuitry, not safe. watch closely (not only on the screen) while the monitor is plugged to the power.

On the back (solder side) of the power board , there is a 16 pin IC, OZ9938. Solder a 50K ohm resistor between pin 16 and pin 3.
You may see the screen, but not be able to adjust the brightness, which has been broken at the first place, causing the whole episode.

Good luck!

My dell 1905FP power button flashes green and will not turn off, the screen is black.

This is a common indication of a failure in the power supply. There are parts called capacitors that are used in the filter section of the power supply, when they go out the power supply can't properly turn on so you get no picture and a flashing power light. Here is a picture of the power supply board with the problem filter capacitors circled in yellow and below the picture in a link to a repair guide with details dis-assemble and repair instruction along with parts list for the Dell 1905FP and 1907FP models.

There are more than one inverter circuit for this model. One is prone to have poor solder connections in the transistors Q8 & Q10.
Another can be repaired by replacing 2 1uF electrolytic capacitors near the center edge of the board between the lamp sockets.

Wacko Dell E151FPB

that sounds like a computer problem, not a monitor problem.  Plug the 'old' monitor in and see if your computer will boot with it.
