Question about Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501 Notebook
The video on my LCD screen has suddenly degraded. If I set the resolution to anything higher that 800x600 I can note read the screen. The brightness is also way down. The screen almost looks like it is in safe mode. The screen adjustment buttons that are with the function keys do not work either. I thought it may be a video card problem but when I hook up and external monitor the picture is fine at all different resolution settings. I know there have been problems with the video cards with this model. Does this sound like a video card problem or maybe a problem with the LCD? I have not taken the laptop apart yet to see if something is loose but I more than willing if that is the next step. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
This is usually caused by the cable that connects the LCD to the system board coming loose.
On this model, you can pop off the shiny black cover with three silver buttons on it above the keyboard. You will see a plug under there with about 25 multi-colored wires coming out of the connector. Carefully pull the connector off and then plug it back in.
If this doesn't fix it, try gently wiggling the plug with the laptop on and see if the picture changes quality at all. If it does, then the port on the system board may have gone bad.
