Question about Compaq Armada E500 Notebook
My E500 when turned on it started going straight to the black screen with COMPAQ written on it and if you leave it it eventually says disc controller 1782. Then if you leave it further it asks you to insert disc and stike any key. Although this problem exists occaisionally you will hear the clicking on pressing the start button from off and the machine would boot up ok, run for a few hours or even days but over a long fustrating period os a couple of months it has now stopped the clicking sound and will not boot up. I was told it could be a capasitor on the motherboard and advised to remove it and inspect. Ive done this and with no joy at all. 2 weeks ago I had it in at a computer shop and it was booting ok then and it had no fault found. They changed the CD drive as this would cause it not to boot it seemed because if I released it from the machine at time of initial boot up then it would work. So thats why the shop thought it was ok. but now its not working with it in or out.
What you have here is a sick laptop. I don't know what disease it has but I know the outcome. It will work then not work then work and not work over and over for a long time. Then it will just stop working all together. Thats what sick laptops do. Working on laptops is very hard. I think the problem you are having is a bad BIOS. Or something is interfering with it because from the error code you gave above it leads me to believe the CMOS or BIOS is having trouble getting it to work at boot and halts. One way around this is going into the CMOS or BIOS and changing the settings not to halt on errors. This may result in the CD/DVD drive not working but at least you can turn it on for a while and back up your data. If I were worried about backing up my data I would just pull the drive out.
