- A couple of obvious items that are probably not the issue -- in the case of the wireless assure distance was not an issue does it fail in the same room with the receiver (router / access point)?
Do you have up to date virus scanning / security software and do full scans report no infections, etc?
All virus scanners do not detect all items
If the machine is working checking with some online scanners could assure the malware (virus, etc) check was more complete.
Companies with online scanners that might be considered (incomplete list)
Trend Micro
F-Secure (
www.fsecure.com and search for online scanner)
Symantec
If these measures do not correct the situation then:
A local hands on repair person may be better able to repair the machine from it's current state -- and could be a reasonable choice that should be considered. In this case it sounds like there has been numerous potential changes to the configuration and other things for someone in my position to begin to understand the current state of the machine or get you to effectively explain that state to me. Your initial request indicated that you wanted to reload the machine and see if that resolved the situation. If you are set on attempting to correct this error yourself and feel competent to reload the factory software the
(assumes a windows operating system)
FIRST STEP IS TO BACKUP YOUR DATA and downloaded applications and any other related items,
Second gather all software installation CDs to rebuild your system
Disconnect your machine from the network (until a virus scanner or internet security software is installed you should limit your network access as much as possible)
Third when your are satisfied this is complete reload the factory software onto your computer. (this step may be multiple if you need to load the operating system and drivers separately)
Fourth (optional) delete unneeded items from the factory load
Fifth install your virus scanner / internet security software if not part of the factory load. (you should connect the network to download all updates to your Virus scanner / internet security software -- this may require multiple updates. If your Virus scanner / Internet security software requires it you may need to perform step 6 and return to step 5. Some security packages require software patches from step 6 before they can install.
Sixth run windows update (from start menu or Internet Explorer tools menu as many times as necessary to complete the updates of your operating system software (often security related) as well other microsoft applications and drivers -- there may be optional items including driver updates and recommended items you will need to explicitly choose. (the network must be connected for this step to be possible)
Seventh -- hp often includes a software update option for their software and drivers -- locating that option in the menu possibly named HP Update and performing those updates (similar to Windows Updates for the Microsoft code) would be appropriate at this time. If this is not available
www.hp.com has a Software and Drivers Doanload link that can identify possible changes in this area.
This should establish your machine in the most up to date configuration making this a known base for installing (if necessary) and configuring and testing the items that were giving you problems (there is a possibility that some of the preceeding changes could have caused the problem -- let's hope not for now).
Now would be a good time to experiment and test the LAN, Wireless and/or 1394 net adapter to assure they are working.
Assuming the issues are resolved -- then
Then as you consider appropriate reload your data and the remaining applications onto the machine. You may wish to continue testing various features after loading each new item just in case one of them is adversly affecting the others.
