SOURCE: GE Spacemaker - microwave works but the inside plate doesn't spin

you have a bad turntable motor or a bad control board.. start with the motor 9 time out of 10 this is your problem.. you can pick up this part at your local parts house or order online.. look for universal part. this will be alot cheaper then the oem.. just take the screws out of bottom panel under microwave. panel will drop down. you will see little round motor about 2in' make sure unit is unplugged.

I covered the plate with 'heavy duty aluminum foil' thinking it was safe for for microwave use, then I saw a sparkle inside while turning. I stopped it, took off the aluminum cover, turned the microwave...

The food is safe as long as the food has not got oxidized aluminium on it.
Microwave energy is very high and will melt metals!
As long as it is not arcing any more there should be no problem.

I have a CMW-100 microwave. The turntable has intermittently stopped spinning. Now, it has stopped spinning entirely. Is there a part I need to replace to fix this problem? Judie Snivley

Sounds like the turntable motor has stopped working.

Replacing the turntable motor.

The motor assembly is fixed to the base of the oven usually with two screws and access i obtained by removing the inspection plate directly beneath the motor. It is usally a plug in synchronus motor that revolves at a few revs per minute but the plastic cogs in the motors gear box fail and the motor assembly must be replaced. They are fairly inexpensive and obtainable usually from a domestic appliance repair shop.
If you feel confident, disconnect it from the mains power, remove anything in the cavity and turn it upside down if it is a tabletop model, a little more complicated if it is built in!
Remove the inspection plate and disconnect the motor. Remove the motor and go and get a new one. Re fit it and put the microwave back in its position. Plug it back in, with the turntable and plate. Put a cup of water on the plate inside of the oven and heat for 20 seconds to check the plate goes round.
Hope this helps.

Turntable has stopped revolving... will start to spin as soon as START button hit - goes about half an inch and then completely stops.

One suggestion i would make is that in the microwave there is the turntable, lift the plate off ,then below it you will see a circular object with wheels on.I think you may have this the wrong way up, so turn it over put the plate back on top and should work.

its the circular piece on runners that is the problem

Plate getting too hot

I don;t think your plate is micorwave safe. Put the plate and a glass measuring cup with water in the microwave for 1 minute, if the plate is hot and the water is not the plate is not microwave safe. IF the water is hot and the plate is not. I don't know what the problem is
