Hello towertech
Happy Holidays
Well, it is a problem with some hardware you install, o a defective RAM, could be modem, or USB port.
also check for bad onboard power connector.
(faulty mobo)

    Good day!

Well, you don't need any sdram for that, it could be your MOBO, or defective RAM, is a good try first, change the RAMS.

is it just staying on or blinking?

  • paul shaw Dec 07, 2007

Blinking amber indicates a problem with an installed device; solid amber indicates an internal power problem

  • paul shaw Dec 07, 2007

if it is staying on it could be a device is malfunctioning or it could be something as simple as the device not sat properly. try removing and reinstalling memmory. then remove and reinstall any cards. then reinstall graphics (if not onboard) hope this helps

When I start the Dell Dimension 4600, it says "Enter password." But when I type the password, the cursor won't move, and no asterisks appear for each character of the password. After repeated attempts, the...

First thing I would do is to reset your CMOS by:

1) Power down.
2) Remove power cord.
3) Push power button in and hold for 15 seconds.
4) Open the case.
5) ground you self to the case for a second. (touch bare metal)
6) Remove the battery for 30 seconds.
7) Replace battery.
8) Double check all your connections and cards if any.
9) Close the case.
10) Connect power and power up.

Your diagnostic lights indicate "Other Failure". (The one on the right is amber, correct?) That could be anything. Here is a reference for your diagnostic lights:

Try resetting the CMOS first and comment back.

BTW, this will remove your password too, so you will have to go into the BIOS and reset. You will probably get a "Configuration change" message when you first boot up. Press F1 to go in and then do a Save & Exit.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Dell dimension 5150 blinking amber lights

I have similar problem these days. After normal shutting down the PC, it can not be powered up again, the amber light blinks. A temp solution for my case is by doing these steps:

1. leave all monitor, network, keyboard and mouse etc. connected
2. disconnect the power, wait until green light and amber light dim.
3. pop up the CMOS battery, then put back in (better to check its remaining voltage, if not good, change a new one)
4. power amber light flash shorter and lighter
5. disconnect any USB connections like keyboard and mouse,
6. immediately connect keyboard and mouse back into USB ports
7. my pc powers up at this point, all green lights shining. Except it displays CMOS setup warnings, give me options to click either F1 or F2
8. I click F1, it goes into normal login XP

The only problem is I could not shutdown PC again, if I do, then I have to repeat 1-8. I have to use "Standby" instead, which I usually do.

Can't boot up Dell 5100 Dimension, amber light flashes

When you mean the amber light, is that the blinking hard drive access light or the power light? Different cases have different colors on it. Mine has blue and green lights.

If you see the boot screen (bios) and then after it goes to boot, does it blink and hang?

This could be a simple operating system issue, hard drive or hardware/motherboard issue. If you could provide more information, that would help.

[Ithr]checkpoint failure dell 8400 dimension

What can cause this error?

Well, this is the problem since quite a variety of problems can trigger the error.

1: the bios can be malfunctioning (a bios reset or flash can give a solution)
2: the cpu can be malfunctioning (this requires a new cpu)
3: the cpu socket can be failing (this requires a new mb)
4: the problem can be with bad usb sockets
5: even a bad uplink to a usb hub can cause this error to appear.
Did you change your monitor lately? I would chase down the USB things first...that and the monitor seem to trip the trigger...
Hope this get you started- I think you were right on target with the flash of the BIOS-try it again using the BIOS flash downloaded from the dell site...and to run the chipset just might
Good luck my friend, hope this helps, please leave rating, thank you kindly
