Scrape or fix? Panasonic inverter genius sensor 1250 watt

Symptom: above model stays on for 3 seconds, shuts off and emits bad smell like burning plastic. Has since been unplugged and tried at another outlet-same result. Is it D.O.A.?

My Panasonic just started doing this also. It runs for 4 seconds and then shuts off. I wonder how many people are having this problem.

I had the exact same problem last month on my Over the Range Panasonic microwave purchased in 2003. First as burning plastic smell and the unit only operating at 1/2 power after that. Finally, a large booming noise at which point I was afraid to continue using it. The authorized Panasonic Repair facility in my area informed me that to cost to repair the inverter would be $155.00 (parts and labor). They said the magnetron also needs replaced but it would be covered under the 5 year magnetron warranty. By the way, the product cost $229.00 new in 2003. Is this worth repairing if the inverter is prone to failure again ? Should Panasonic be paying to repair these inverters ?

I set 5 minutes on the quick button, turned around to continue working and the microwave had stopped. Thought I didn't set the microwave so I did it again. Same thing happened again except this time I had a witness. My son tried to set it for a third time and again the microwave started but stopped within seconds except this time smoke started coming out the bottom of the unit.

My unit just started doing the same thing but at 5 seconds.

PANASONIC NN-T785 INVERTOR. Last night, smoke and shut off, from the interior, right side. Today, will turn on only for about three-four seconds. Sounds like the other postings. Bought in 2005, from Costco.

I think this unit (NN T785) is a bad unit--bad design or something. I have already had mine repaired 2x (both in the 1st year of warranty). First it was the turntable, then just before the warranty expired the burning smell, smoke, etc. When we took it in and the repairman called Panasonic for parts--there was actually a pre-set kit for this problem it happens so much. Now about a year later (and out of warranty) it won't power on. No burning smell, just tries for 2-3 seconds then nothing. I wouldn't waste any more money on a Panasonic microwave (inverter). I had an old unit that lastest for 10 years, so somehow they've lost quality.

Same thing, i have mine with a burning smell and not heating anymore. It just stopped after i heated some rice and some potatoes. Also the 3 final beeps stopped to work. The lcd panel still work as nothing is going on. That pissed me off because this microwave still look as new! Not sure to go again with Panasonic, i'm tired of these cheep things....I'll rater go for more expensive one with no asset but i think it's impossible to find in this **** world!

Looks like is a common problem on this " high tech piece of junk". It runs for only 5 seconds and then shuts off. I'm lucky, no burning smell, no smok. Just the $ 500.00 ++ I spent on it 3 years ago are burnt out/gone. Is anything good I can do with it, or better scrap it. Thanks. Ritzu

In most cases, this is a problem with the inverter but it may be a bad magnetron.

Due to the lethal voltages used and produced, I do not recommend that an inexperienced person work on these.

I would recommend that you contact your nearest Panasonic-authorized servicer. You can find one here:

Clock is set by pushing "clock". entering time on number pad, and touching "clock" again. This should do it.

My Frigidaire oven model feb386wech emits a burning plastic smell when heating up and cooking. What's causing this?

After 16 years of service, the oven may be starting to consume itself. I have found melted light fixtures and scorched, brittle wiring. If you can't isolate the source of the smell, it could be time to replace.

We have a GE profile microwave with inverter tech that will come on for about 5 seconds then shut off. Unplug it and plug it back in it does the same thing. It lets off a terrible smell almost like a...

Remove vent grille, then remove control panel. Check wire to cavity thermostat. Sometime wire bundle and small space causes poor terminal connections on this thermostat and will burn wire terminal. Cut off bad part of the wire, install a small terminal end, reconnect to thermostat. If thermostat is destroyed, also replace thermostat.

Smoke and burning plastic smell in microwave oven

Burning plastic, not food? A component has overheated badly then, with a plastic case. The main suspect would be the high voltage capacitor in the magnetron supply. This is cheap and easily replaced ONLY IF you know what you are doing and can diagnose the fault. If you don't then DO NOT take the case off the unit as fatal voltages can be present inside even if the unit is unplugged.

I'd just buy another, as they are generally uneconomical to have repaired by a service tech.

MIcrowave emits an electrical smell while cooking. It still cooks, but has started emitting an odor recently when in use.

Is the smell ionized (the outside smell of a cold winter morning air) or more of an electronic component burning??? if it's more of an ionized smell it could be normal, (if the smell is strong) it could be a leaking high voltage cable (electric arching) bad insulator, if it's more of an electronic component burning smell, it could be a overheating component, in both cases you should have it checked by a professional technician...

Cheers!

Microwave makes a loud buzzing noise and emits a burning plastic smell

This indicates the magnetron has failed, buzzing sound and odor are classic symptoms. It is cheaper to replace than have it repaired.

Capacitor burned out? horrible burnt smell.

YOUR GOING TO NEED A NEW MICROWAVE . the cap may be bad but the real bad smell you have is most likely the HV tranformer , if the magntron shorts to ground there will be a small smell if you dont pick up on that and your microwave is set to run another few mins the transformer will overheat and burn , then the fuse blows and the controls shut down . the end result , you have more parts bad than you have good . if you google " GE SPACEMAKER MICROWAVE FIRE ' you will see your not the only one , its getting to be COMMON . good luck

Microwave turns, gives out strong burnt plastic smell, little (or no) heating

I would first suggest that you look inside the cooking cavity to see if your wavegudie cover is burned or carbonized. If so, it will need to be replaced. You can order one via Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com The job of the waveguide cover is to protect the waveguide (opening) and the magnetron from buildup of food particles and grease. When the grease and food particles build up on and behind the cover, they will carbonize and arc - and maybe even flame up! The solution is to clean it and keep it clean - but if it's too dirty or is burned, it must be replaced. Sometimes it's necessary to remove the cover to clean both sides of it, and to clean the edges of the opening it covers. It is sometimes held in place with a small plastic rivet (or screw) and once that is removed, the cover will slide over a little then drop down. Be VERY careful not to get cut on the potentially sharp edges of the opening, and do not spray anything into the opening. Apply an alcohol-based cleaner (such as the purple kind) and /or gentle scouring powder to a cloth or paper towel and carefully wipe it out, then when it's dry, reinstall the cover and the rivet. I suggest to my customers that they NEVER use any ammonia-based cleaner (like the blue stuff) on a microwave, since the ammonia will crack and distort polycarbonate plastics. Once you remove and / or clean the cover and clean the opening of the waveguide, if it still won't heat and/or still has the smell, you may have a bad magnetron or high-voltage transformer. Feel free to post back if you still have trouble.
