Dissy = Distributor?

mf 1989 triton? Mitsubishi Triton 1989?
Australian model?
Here it is called a Mighty Max.
You didn't state what size engine.

No matter as this is basic mechanics. If you're in the ballpark with setting the static timing, turning the distributor will help get it right, and the computer will take over.

1.How do you know you have the Number 1 piston at TDC? Use the finger method on the spark plug hole, until air pushed it off, when the engine was bumped over?
->Good.

Now look at the harmonic balancer.
The 2.5Liter engine should be set to between 5 and 8 degrees BEFORE Top Dead Center. (BTDC)
The 3.2Liter should be set to 3 to 7 degrees BTDC.

This is just Base Timing. Don't worry about it being too accurate, as the computer will take over, and set the timing. You may have to move the distributor also to fine tune it.

Whatever engine it is set the base timing to 8 degrees Before Top Dead Center.
(See how far the distributor will swing in either direction. Set it to the middle, and just snug the mounting clamp bolt down. Snug it so that the distributor will not turn on it's own, but you can reach over, and turn it by hand)

If you use the finger method, be aware that as your finger is pushed off of the spark plug hole, the harmonic balancer will have turned PAST the point it should be setting at. Past the timing mark on the harmonic balancer.

Observe which way the harmonic balancer is spinning. (As you face the front of the engine, the balancer should spin to the Right)

You need to turn the balancer back by hand to the timing mark. [Means turning the balancer to the Left as you face the front of the engine]

Now, distributor cap removed, observe the rotor. Is it close to the Number 1 spark plug tower? It should be close to coming around towards the Number 1 tower, or just past the Number 1 tower. Turn the distributor, until the rotor will be just right before the Number 1 tower.

(Observe the distributor cap. Look at the top. It should have the number 1 next to a spark plug tower. Now set the dist. cap on the distributor.
See where number 1 spark plug tower lines up in relation to the distributor)

That direction of harmonic balancer rotation as you face the engine was erroneous!!

As you FACE the engine, the balancer will spin to the LEFT.

(Normal method of referring to an engine in a vehicle, is sitting in the Drivers seat. The Left side is the Drivers side. The Right side is the Passenger side. Sitting in the DRIVERS seat, the engine spins to the RIGHT)

If I accidentally pulled distributor out without knowing exact location of rotor how do I find correct placement for rotor? 2002 Nissan quest

This is just a shot in the dark... But i THINK the # 1 cylinder needs to be @ top dead center.... And the rotor needs to be pointing at the part of the cap where the spark plug wire connection for cylinder #1 is.

number one cylinder is closest to the timing belt

With the plug out and finger over the plug hole while turning the motor clockwise ...number one cylinder will be the only cylinder coming to compression at Top dead Centre

on the dissy The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6,

with rotor to number one when it is at Top Dead Center

Disy cap on the wrong way round

Hi Garry, from my experience it is very hard to put a dissy cap on backwards because of the location lugs, you simply can't get the clips to hold the cap on, they may have the wires on back to front. If your engine is running, that makes it easier, remove your spark plugs and distributor cap, turn engine over to point of no1 firing, this will have a small line on distributor housing that will line up with rotor button. then you check for a timing mark on the front pulley (the mark on some models is through the rear of the block with a mark on the fly wheel) make a note of the timing position, remove the dissy, turn it 1 full turn, that means turn your motor until the mark comes back to where it was then replace the dissy making sure the marks are in the same place, make sure you change the leads to where they belong you should run. If you have a timing light, remove the vacuum line from the dissy, with engine at low idle timing light on #1 set timing on the marks found earlier. Merry Christmas

Reset timing on chain for 85 olds cutlass

I used to have one of these...there are 2 top dead centre positions you have to watch for. Top Dead Centre "Compression" and Top Dead Centre "Exhaust".

With the distributor cap on, you will know where number 1 is on the distributer, remove the distributor cap and then turn the motor using the crank...keep turning until you see the rotor pointing to number 1. If the number 1 piston is at TDC then you are good to go with it being at TDC Compression- rotor at 1.
If your rotor is at number 1 but your number 1 piston is down then you need to remove the distributor from the rotor 180 degrees then slide the distributor back into the block carefully...remembering to be careful because your oil pump is run by a shaft which snaps onto the bottom of the distributor.

Removed distributor didn't mark location of rotor put the distributor back in truck will not run.put the distributor in were i was sure top dead center was still will not run.how can i be sure i am at...

hawkie74542, As you are standing in front of the vehicle looking at the engine the spark plug on the right in the front is the number one cylinder. Remove the spark plug. On your crank shaft pulley find the timing mark and mark it with some whiteout or anything else that will show up well. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the mark lines up with zero on the timing gauge on the engine. When you have done this, with a long screwdriver check the hole where the number one spark plug was. You should not be able to put the screw driver in too far as the top of the piston should be right there at the top of the cylinder. This will get you to top dead center. The rotor should be pointing directly at the number one spark plug. Tighten the distributor down but not all the way as you will need to turn the distributor for the final timing. Replace the spark plug and wire and with a timing light finish the timing procedure. Good luck with this.

How do you set the timing on a 1998 GMC Sierra?

The timing is not adjustable and it is computer controlled, but the distributor must still be clocked in properly and static timed, and here is how it is done.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This static timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to the mark or notch on the distributor housing, the engine should now be static timed.

Hi i have a problem with retiming my ignition system as i cannot find any timing marks on the distribution pickup

probably electronically controlled no timing marks usually indicates that the timing is controlled electronically and the only way to adjust is using a scan tool.

When setting the timing gears, where do you set the distributor?

from memory no4 on dissy when timing marks on cam timing in correct position, no 1 cam lobes should be "rocking" and no4 cylinder should be at top dead firing stroke(ignition)should be notch in dissy when cap is off or set so rotor button is lined up with cyl no 4 ht lead position

No spark

Set your engine to TDC and see if your rotor arm is pointing to number 1 cylinder. If not, slowly move the dissy until the arm is pointing to No 1 cylinder. Lock the dissy and turn over the engine. The HT leads needs to be the correct order.

Timeing

If you have made sure that the timing marks were set right on harmonic balancer before removing distributor then point the rotor toward the terminal/H/T lead that leads to no.1 plug. There should be a mark on the distributor that indicates no.1 position. Its just a line in the distributor where the cap sits on the distributor.
