How do I adjust brightness and contrast

On a MacBook try hitting F1 and F2. You'll notice they have small little icons to signify less bring and more bright.
Also doable via the display Preferences (Apple Icon top left, Preferences, Display).

Adjust brightness screen

Please try to give as much detail as possible. Model/year is useful, so I'm going to have to take a blind leap.

On the function keys along the top row of the keyboard, you should see two keys that looks like a sun. On my keyboard of a 2013 MacBook Air, it is F1 and F2. While holding down the "fn" key (bottom left had corner) press F1 and F2 to adjust as you wish.

The other way is: Settings --> Display then click on the Display tab, from there you can adjust the brightness.

Display is too Dark to work with but brightness lever up to max.

Apparently the backlight for your display is failing. You'll most likely have to have the top half of the macbook replaced per Apple usual service standards.

I have connected my macbook to my tv using mini

Later MacBook (Pro) use a mini-DVI connector that does not pass analog needed for composite or S-video. Was yours ever working? And most DVI connectors do not pass sound as seen by your cabling. You cannot detect display through RCA. You just set it in Sys Prefs :: Displays, try some other settings, although your seem right.
I have a white early-2009 MacBook and mini-DVI to HDMI adapter (monoprice <$10) and HDMI cable and have not connected the TOS-link for sound, yet--just slideshows at 1920x1080. You will get a much better picture digitally. -Ken

Volume controls problem

There are options in System Preferences :: Sound for a volume slider in the menu bar and in Displays for the brightness slider. This can get you by but your keys seem to be remapped--check Keyboard & Mouse that your shortcuts are not changed and you are not using them for F1.... (Restore should have fixed that.) -Ken

MacBook Screen Problem

Hi there
If I understand you correctly from start up the screen is dim but does brighten up after time? But now after start up you are getting a flicker how ever a restart solves this.

On the dimming issue. Check your energy saving settings and brightness key is working OK.

The flickering is a bit of a concern.

Just a couple of questions.
Are there any dead spots on the screen? Areas where there are no pixels.
When you tilt the screen forward and backward, does this effect the brightness or flickering?

Screen colour

You should be able to lower the brightness, using the slider below the resolution menu. For longer display and battery life, Apple recommends lowering the threshold. But, it should not be making the image distort or have any degradation to the image. If your machine is less than a year old ( and has no signs of user fault or P2P software ) you are eligible for complementary APPLECARE assistance. It makes no difference where you bought the computer. APPLE is international, and any APPLE STORE or 3rd PARTY APPLE AUTHORIZED REPAIR CENTER, should examine and troubleshoot this issue.

Keep me posted.
