I have mine hooked up with a standard video/audio RCA cable.
Just plug the yellow video cable into the video output (yellow) in back of the Sansui and into the video input of your TV. Same for the audio cables (red and black usually).

Record a VHS to DVD:

Put a blank DVD-R in DVD
choose YES when it asks to format disc.
switch to VHS
Put tape to copy into VCR
On the remote press <play> then <dubbing>
If you want to play in any DVD player:

*After* recording VHS to DVD:
1) Put DVD back into unit.
2 ) Press "DVD" on remote.
3 ) DVD light will light up on the unit: press "set up ">>>"system set up"- press enter>>> "disc set up" press enter>>>"finalize" press enter >>>>choose "yes" and wait until disc finalizes.
If finalize bar stays on for a long time and isn't moving, press stop or eject DVD and wait a while. Wait until their is no movement in the bar for a long time. DVD Should now be finished and usable in any DVD player.

Your model is a DVD player only and has no recording capability. There are devices that will allow you to transfer your VHS tapes to a computer equipped with a CD/DVD writer to preserve them on disk.
Tevion is one make that comes to mind.

SOURCE: My DVD recorder will not recognize any of the DVDs

yes, that is the solution... try to get the DVD that is 4x (Maxell, Dynex) most are all up to 16x now... unless you can find a firmware update for Sansui (I tried already for you, but you can with out a doubt try too)

Burning home movies from recorder to disc

make sure its finalizing the disc you may have to go into menu or options to check, but if plays in the but not in standalone thats sounds like the problem.

Only dvd plays properly but vhs will not show picture.

Most likely you have the dvd part connected through component or svideo cables. Despite the fact that this is one unit, like other vcr/dvd combo units it acts as two separate units in the same box. The vcr will probably not play through those cables. As you have audio coming through I'd imagine that the audio is connected using red and white composite cable. Connect the video on the vcr side with composite yellow cable or run direct to tv with a coaxial cable.

Aquarius0128 there are two things to consider here.. dvd's recorded on a computer need to be closed/finalized after you have recorded onto them in order to be used on a stand alone player.. they will play ok on original recorder because of the design of these machines finalizing prepares the structure of the disc so it can be recognised by other players as a dvd video disc.. you will usually see a 'finalize disc' option in your recording program

Second issue is this.. even if finalized an older (or even some modern) stand alone players will not recognise a recorded disc made on a computer or even if it can there are different formats DVD+R DVD-R and even DVD-RAM and DVD-RW (the two latter ones are rarely recognised outside a computer)

What type of dvd do you need to use to record?

If you click on the "VRDVD5000 DVD Recorder...Combo" link at the top of the page and scroll down towards the bottom of the page that brings up, you'll find an outline spec for the machine. Just looking at that, it would appear you ought to be trying "dvd-r" - (The difference between plus and minus is significant - it's a shame nobody thought to make the names more distinctive). Suggest you buy a single dvd-r, see how you get on, and only invest in a bigger pack once you know it's going to work. A.
