I have had the same problem with home movies. Try re-recording your original movie, or a home movie. Perhaps it is a dusty optical lens inside?

If discs skip, freeze or doesn't read, along with the recording problem, then it could be a dirty lens. If cleaning lens doesn't fix it the optical p/u assembly will have to be replaced. Make sure the items you are trying to record aren't copy guarded.
