    I also called support and they thought that the ink pad needed replacing. Has anyone gotten the same response? how do you replace this part?

    Printer won't print. It let me print a dozen times after it first came up. Then completely stopped. On printer screen it says "Service required. Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life. See your printer's documentation for details."

    I have the same problem with an RX700. It is three years old, and everything else works perfectly. I got the "end of service life" message and emailed Epson support. After exchanging way too many emails, I phoned them and had to talk with about seven people, all of whom told me the same thing: the ink pads are full and need to be replaced. "Take it to your nearest service center." Ha! The nearest service center is five hours away. Epson tech support also told me it would be very expensive to replace the ink pads and that it would be cheaper to buy a new printer (and possibly profitable for them!)

    There is a way to take the machine apart, remove the ink pads and clean them, but it is a very difficult and complex procedure, one which I would not even think of trying to do. I read the link posted by "guest" and my research about this issue has resulted in the same conclusions.

    A few days ago I bought a new multifunction printer--an Epson Artisan 800, and now I'm having problems with it. I am going to take it back this week and re-install my RX700, reset the counter, and keep using it, just as the poster on the link has done, taking the chance that ink will leak all over my home office. To reset the counter, Epson has a page with instructions, but it is hard to find. They don't want anyone to find it, actually. I will look for it again and if I find it I will post it here.

    By the way, when I bought the RX700 three years ago Epson had wonderful tech support--all in the U.S. and Canada. They have since outsourced to the Philippines and not only is their tech support terrible, but their customer service is even worse.

I posted the same problem but have finally found out how to fix. Let me remind you, I have an Epson Stylus RX700 and I run Vista on my computer. Epson will now resolve this problem with a download. Tried it and my printer is now working once again. I do suggest cleaning the sponges that collect the ink. Just to make sure they aren't over filled. Still haven't figured out how to clean the right side of the carriage where the printhead sits. I am going to try printing a full page and in the middle of printing, unplug the unit. Hopefully that will keep the printhead to the side. Hope this helps.

    It wasn't an old link but changes. If you go to the Epson website, click on Drivers & Support, then click All In Ones, then pick your printer such as RX700, then click on FAQ's. You will have a list of questions. Click the answer link to "What should I do if my printer driver displays the message parts inside my printer are reaching their end of service life?" Answer will be, "See the Epson Ink Pad Reset Utility page". Click on that link. Towards the bottom of that page you will have to fill out your name, address, printer info, etc. That will then take you to your down load. It works great. I also cleaned the pads. First the one on left which is easy. The one on the right, under the print head is more difficult. Click to print a page and unplug when the print head is in the center. Clean and plug back in.

    It sounds like you have a different type printer than I have. I have an RX700. All I had to do was lift up the top portion of my printer/scanner. I can see the ink pads on each side of the printer carriage. Not sure about other printers. I don't have any doors, etc. Sorry, I won't be able to help you on that part.

    Thanks for the clarification about the link. I would like to know in more detail how you were able to clean the ink pads. I know there is a small "door" on the back and on the left side, and I read somewhere to take out the screw and remove the door to reach the inkpads. I was able to do that, but saw no inkpads. Did you have to take the printer apart to clean them? I would certainly like to try it, but other advice I have read makes it seem time-consuming, confusing, and messy, among other things. I don't feel very confident about attempting it. If you found it to be easier than what I have described, please, please let me know. Thanks!

    I've recently had the same problem with a Photo Stylus R320 printer. I was just about to throw the whole thing in the trash when a friend of mine sent me a link to download an Epson Printer Adjustment program. Which works on many models. I was able to reset the "End of life" error that I was getting regarding the print head of my printer. It takes a little bit of time to go into this program and run all of its checks but once completed everything works great! It is like a new printer. I have included a link to where I was able to download the program and the name of the program itself just in case you need to do a google search.

SOURCE: service life has ended on my epson stylus r320 photo printer

I have had a R300M for a while now and had a few cartridges in it. (Mostly Compatible Cartridges not OEM) Recently a message came up on the screen 'parts inside your printer are at the end of their life' and the printer refused to work! 
After searching the web it appears to be a waste ink counter, but I could not find any info on resetting it. 
Tried pressing different combinations of buttons on the printer and success. (Found Ink counter reset)

Press and hold 'stop' 'maintenance'(ink button) and 'power' buttons for about 10 seconds,(while printer is on) a message will come up on the screen saying counter is reset and to turn off. 

Thats it, turned my printer back on, and all works fine again. 

I hope this helps R300/R300M owners out!
(Also I have email into Epson Support, can't wait to hear what they say the problem is for the fix!)

Epson programmed their printer to monitor the waste ink counter and your printer has reached the maximum value allowed, you have to reset your printer to clear the waste ink counter.

Epson stylus cx5500 printer problem

probably refers to empty cartridges
everything has a service life and it could be a possible part that is wearing out and needs replacing

you have 2 options --ignore it untl it stops performing
or get in a service technician
